Calling all MS3 Owners with smoking Turbos...

Would a DP/RP and cai cause a turbo seal failur perhaps.

Mods don't cause a seal failure... If your turbo oil seal fails, its been there since your turbo was slapped on your car... The turbos are bad from the day they were born; those that are affected.

Ok guys after reading most of this thread i'm not 100% sure as to which are the affected cars. I'm currently looking at either buying a new 08' MS3 or a slightly used 08' MS3. Does the oil burning issue only effect the 2007 models or is it the 08' model MS3's as well??

Mainly the 2007s are the ones that are affected (hit or miss)...though there are a handful early 2008s too... The later you go down the build date, the less likely it is for a turbo with bad seals.
I have not heard of a single late build 2008 or 2008.5 having issues.

Thanks AutoX, so basically if i go in and purchase a new one off the lot I should have any problems.

so....

1. I'm new to this forum. Just bought a 2008 MS3
2. How do you know if its 2008 or 2008.5?
3. After reading this whole thread my head hurts...When I get on it, it lets out some smoke is that normal (extra gas getting dumped)?
4. Black sut on the exhaust, is that normal?
5. definitely doesnt smoke at idle.
6. thanks!

judging by what i've read on this thread the little puff of black smoke and black sut on the exhaust is normal when getting on it hard. Its the whiteish blueish thick smoke thats occuring at idle that you have to worry about.

Yes, the stuff that burns the crap out of your eyes!!

FYI, my turbo was replaced under warranty last week! No more smoking for me!

2006 MazdaSpeed6

11,000 Miles

Total Turbo replacement due to it smoking. Took it to dealership 3 times before we were able to replicate the problem. Also had to have the BOV replace about 3 months earlier due to it splitting in half.

finally had this happend to me. smoking out the back as well as from under the hood. is it typical to have the smoking from under the hood?
returning car to stock this weekend and bringing it into the dealership to get this problem fixed. hopefully knowing the owner will push things in my favor. any advice before i head in?

before u return ur car to stock, tighten the dp-midpipe flanges as tight as it would allow you without overly tight that you'll break it and see if it'll still smoke, this happened to me during install...smoking under the hood, that's because i didnt tighten that part enough cause i was thinkin the bolt wasnt tighten that far before the install. after i tightened it...no more smoke! worth a try.

Just add my 2 cents here. I have a Turbo XS TBE. I have 22k miles on my car. No smoking as far as I know.

the smoke under the hood is "hopefully" what happened to me with my new turboxs downpipe and racepipe. The oils in them burn off slowly making large amounts of smoke. However, it they are not tightened to specs, the smoke will not only escape from the tip, but will seep out of the joint and run up the tunnel into the engine bay. I freaked out when it happened but just got under the car and it was obvious what was going on.
Good luck!

how do you like the turboxs dp? would you reccommend it? or do you hear better things about the corksport compared to your turboxs dp? noise levels over maybe a dpbe? just asking....im getting a dp in a month or so and if the few extra bucks for the corksport isnt really worth the extra cash ill go for the xs.

Turbo XS rocks no cel no norhing just some more power.

for guys taht are smoking, whats you oil level on the dipstick , some people are seeing that adding 6 quarts is overfull and resulting in to much oil in engine and it leaking through the turbo... if the turbo is overfull.. then yea it will smoke..

just some food for thought..

ill check that out today. the reason i initially eliminated that as a possibility is that i am due now for an oil change. so for the past 3000 or so miles there hasnt been any smoking whatsoever. had it been right after the oil change, i'd think differently.

regardless, i'll check that out and hope overflow is the problem so i don't have to put the stock pipes back on and get into the dealership. everyone cross their fingers for me.

I'm liking it alot. I'm having some sputtering issues, but I think they're unrelated. I'm not sure I've heard better things about the corksport or not. I heard the divorced design was better but cause a little more turbolag than a straight through design, plus the TXS was cheaper so I went with it. I'm not scared of noise, in fact I embrace it and encourage more, the car is not much louder under normal driving conditions, at WOT however is has a much throatier and louder growl. The corksport has exhaust hangers, the TXS has flex joints, I dunno, I guess it's just up to the purchaser.

Oh yeah almost forgot, the new found power is EFFN amazing. Boost comes on fast and hard, the tires break loose, the car plants you back like it should now.
