CAI came yesterday

I got my new ebay CAI in the mail, it's the one with the black holders. I'll let you know how it fits, but from what I see it's an exact replica of an injen intake
 
Cool. They are pretty easy to install. Just make sure it is well clear of the master cylinder.
 
just installed the CAI and in conclusion, the response is faster on the low end compared to a sri, as well as a nicer punch on the high end. Great for on the highway. Only drawback is the chance of a water lock during a rainy day. It was a perfect fit, but it didn't come with instructions. Putting it on was pretty self explanitory, and it helped to have a picture. So I'm reporting that the ebay CAI with the black holders is a good, quality CAI.
 
Cool man congrats on your purchase...I have the AEM short Ram, and I might consider buying an Ebay CAI since it's so inexpensive.

Cool, if you can honestly feel a little difference I might do this someday as a cheap, what-the-hell-why-not project. I'm currently running eBay short ram with a Monsterflow filter. Satisfied... but now I've got the OBX headers and they're not jet-hot coated it might be getting a little hot under the hood ya know?

If I ever have to drive through a foot of water I'll just take a screwdriver and unhook it at the MAF :D
 
i think you'll find the chance of vapour lock is very very slim. i have had my cai for 4 years now and never had a problem. i have driven in bucketing down rain with my fog light removed (i have removed the area behind the fog light so you could see the air filter) and no problem. that night i had a look at the air filter and it was soaked. car is still perfect. unless you're planning on driving through 20 inches of water, dont sweat it.

I'm planning on doing the same thing sometime soon to my car.. take out the fog lights and cut out the plastic behind it. I drive in heavy rain for about 1/3 of the year, so what would you say the chances are of getting vapor lock, if the filter were to get quite wet on an almost daily basis? Will heavy rain do me in, or does it pretty much take the whole filter to be submerged?

also, did you get some kind of grille to cover those two holes where the foglights were? I'm hoping to find something as close to the stock lower grille as I can.
 
i did a how too somewhere ages ago on the mod. very basic mod. i have the fog light in all the time and only take it out for drag racing and dyno tests (however didnt take it out last night at drag racing - forgot)

anyway, the pipe opening must be completely or almost completely submurged to get vapour lock. the engine will always suck in air over water as it's far easier. so if the filter gets wet, there will never be a problem. even if the pipe opening gets half blocked there probably wont be a problem either.

it included the brackets to relocate the coolant bottle, and it sounds more aggressive than a sri. To push off in first gear is more responsive and second gear doesn't lag in the beginning, now it just pushes straight through. It was definetly a great buy for 50 bucks with shipping
 
no worries, just in the market for an intake and thought I'd try to figure out CAI vs SRI w/o reading 150 pages of flamewars over them is all :)
 
150 pages of flame wars condensed into two simple statements.

CAI:

You definately get better performance with the CIA. I used to have one of the off brand eBay CAIs but noticed that there was a much greater peak in performance when I bumped up to the Injen CAI. Not to mention the sweet sound of a CAI is addictive. I just dont like the thought of putting a huge straw over roads that have HUGE puddles. This is the story in both ATL and FL where I live, thus I went back down to an SRI.

SRI:

Now the SRI has a little less performance than the CAI for obvious reasons. But it still has a sweet sound. Again I had an eBay brand before I went with AEM and again noticed a cleaner performance gain with the AEM, not to mention the wonderful instructions with pictures.

If you live in a relatively dry area or arent scared of sticking a straw over water then go with the CAI you definately wont regret it, but you could also go with the SRI and just modify the factory snorkel of the the air assembly such that you can keep the snorkel in with your SRI and have force fed air delivered to your SRI.

Snorkel: The bulky assembly of the factory air intake from the front assembly of the engine compartment up to the factory air box. If you have ever done your own intake before you know exactly what I am talking about.
