2003 Yellow Mazda Protege5 Autostick
My wife went out to the car this morning and the car wouldn't turn over, click or anything. Since she has ben tought a little about her car since we bought it, she poped the hood and checked the conections to the battery and some of the other conections. She then tried the car and it still wouldn't start. So she called Mazda and told them what was going on. While waiting for the tow guy she closed the hood and tried it again. The damn thing startd. I did some searching and didn't see any tsb's that I could see covering this. Its at the dealership right now and I'm thinking that since she said the car had power but wouldn't turn or click that it might be a loose connection somewhere. Is there any tsb's on the starter system that I missed? Just wondering. Hell of a thing to happen at about 1,000 miles on it.

i read about this b4... Maybe it was a showroom car, and the battery was drained at the dealer, then recharged..

Yes I do have a cold air intake, why?

Well, I had a CAI on my Spec-V, this could be the problem. I don't have one on my P5 so I'm not sure if this is a similar set up.

Anyways, the CAI that was on my Spec was rubbing a sensor from the clamps that go over the rubber on the CAI. This sensor controlled the starter and everytime my engine would rock the CAI would push this sensor out causing the car not to start, but only periodically because it would rock itself back in there and start sometimes.... long story short I took it to the dealer and they were nice about it and said that intake you put on there was rubbing this, all I had to do was looses the clamp and turn it back some.

Check and see if a clamp or something is close to any type of sensors or something.

Yeah I probably should have checked out the car before going to the dealership but the wife and i only had an hour between me getting off of work and her getting to school along with dealership closing at five so I didn't get a chance to stick my head under the hood. I guess thats what the waranty is for. I don't remember the intake going anywhere near any sensors though. It pretty much comes off the throttle body without any interferance. Still anything is possible. I once had a Maxima that hted my wife. It would die on her going down the road but never caused me any sorta problems.

I also thought that when I put my CAI on it was not in the way of anything, but then this happened. It sounds exactly like what I had. Anyways, cheap fix if it is. Good luck.

It could be a dead spot in the starter. Sometimes there's a bad coil and all you have to do is bang on the starter or even the motor to reset it. I have no idea why this works bit it does. Shutting the hood may have done the trick.

I got the car back today. They said they checked everything and couldn't find anything. The service ticket said that I needed to install the factory intake further diagnosis. MY ASS!!!! The tech also told my wife that the intake will void the waranty and when I talked to him he said the mechanic said that when you use a K&N filter with a maf the oil from the filter can ruin the maf so i told him that i wonder how good his mechanic is since i dont have an oil type filter on the cai on the car and that its not a K&N filter

Hmmmm... not to thread jack, but when my dealer brought my car from another dealer to me, it didn't start! He had to bring out a charger and crank it from there. He said that it was sitting for a long time so the battery just needed a recharge. I haven't had any problems with the battery yet, but will I have any in the future?

What type of CAI do you have then?? I don't believe that I've ever seen an aftermarket air intake system that uses a "stock style" paper filter. The only thing I can think of is that it may be a foam filter. If you have an Injen, it's an oiled cotten guaze material like that of a K&N, just not with the name on it. Just wondering.

it might be just that there's rust on the connectors that connect the wires and the battery, try cleaning it with sand paper to clean the rust. that's what happened to me, and I never had the problem since.

It just snowed here so its gotta be a little bit nicer out or the kids gotta be driving me nuts before I do anything on her car. The filter is styled like a K&N its the type you get at autozone. I wanted to put a K&N on but my wife didn't want to yet. So the paper or whatever its made out of will work untill spring. It just pissed me off that the mechanic was all about the waranty being ruined when he didn't even know what he was talking about with the filter.
What I did is, I used the short ram intake for a 96-99 civic and modified it to fit the mp5 after the rubber hose that comes off the throttle body. By cutting part of the pipe you get a cai. It works relatively easily.

Same s*** as the K&N, just a different name. If you do a search, someone put up a link to a site fairly recently that had some independent research a guy had done on air filters. You may find it helpful.

Its an auto stick, but i did ask her if she had it in park. lol
She gave me a youradumbass look and said yes. lol

It only did it once and hasn't done it since(knock on wood). So we'll see from now on what happens.
