Bluetooth mic

can anyone link me to a bluetooth mic setup post with pics? and/or tell me how i would route a bluetooth mic in a mazda 3 2006

thanks!

hey man, got a mazda 3 2006.

I'm trying to figure out how to route a bluetooth mic cable for mic placement. using the new grom Bt unit. and teh grom module hopefully if long enough will be in the ashtray compartment and i know how to do that (found a lot of good posts). HOwever i have no clue how to route it out of there and to where. I do know of theA-Pillar and removing it and such but I have air bags on the side, not sure if those are directly behind the pillar or not? The mic needs to be mounted close to the map lights/center above area to avoid noise from the outside/ hence not to mount near the a-pillar it self. I read a post that said to route into the map light and then down to the a-pillar. but i need to have a clean install and hide the wires. wouldn't that require donig something with the headliner? would i have to take that off. or just put it twoards the side? I would need to keep it away from the window. to avoid freezing etc.

Do you have any pics or detailed instructions ? I feel like i can do htis myself. Since i know how to take the center part after reading a lot. Hope u still check ur forum. Please let me know! the grom BT dongle is a bit weird. look up a pic at gromaudio.com

Thanks !

Assuming the cable is long enough it shouldn't be too hard to route the cable to the maplights. Basically run the cable out from behind the ashtray section along one of the tube supports under the dash (to either side of the center console. From there run up the side of the dash behind the rubber trim for the door. Pop the A-pillar cover loose and run the cable up to the headliner and across to the maplight.

You can run across under the dash without removing anything. For getting to the sides you'll want to remove the outer kick panel on that side. Open the door, grab the door sill and pull up to release. Then remove the single pop anchor from the kick panel and pull the whole thing towards the back of the car to release it. From there you'll want to go up and behind the A-pillar. To remove that grab the rubber trim along the front of the door frame and pull it off of the frame (it just comes loose). Grab the center/bottom of the A-pillar trim and pull towards the inside of the car to pop the couple of tension clips loose. Then grab the whole pillar and slide it up towards the roof to release the last clip. Once it's loose you'll see the airbag rolled up against the pillar (not the plastic cover). Run your cable up and route it behind the airbag so that it doesn't interfere with anything. From there you can hook it over the edge of the headliner and tuck it in across towards the center of the windshield and the map lights. To remove the map lights grab the side edges and pull down hard. There's a stiff metal clip on either side you need to release. It might help to shift the housing towards one side to depress the clip on that side. It's really stiff the first time you try to take it out. Also if you're doing this somewhere cold then it might be more difficult to remove the various pieces.

hey thanks so much for the instructions. did a bunch of research and found a bunch of posts and used them to get input. Tried it saturday and failed miserably and couldn't figure out how to have the grom unit in the ashtray, only later i realized it could only sit behind and thats how most people did it.

I had a time and a half trying to put back the a-pillar cover. I didn't realize the white knob/clip actually could be pulled out all the way and then i attached it to the a pillar trim and popped all 3 back in place in a flash.

I do have some questions still.

i ended up putting the bluetooth dongle in the drivers side kick panel. The Grom bluetooth mic is two part and the mic cable itself wasn't long enough. Though after i installed i noticed they said to try to avoid putting it near metal and the door is like right there? wondering what u thought? I also put it behind these wires. is that okay? The Bt isn't activated yet as the software update is hitting monday or tuesday on grom's site.
I was a little concerned about the airbag. i noticed there was a hole in the bag itself that is wrapped up against the pillar. But i loooked closely and each layer of hte bag had the same hole, and i'm certain i didn't damage it as looking at the airbag closely it looked as if it was finely cut (the holes). Let me know if you think this is correct and its nothing to worry about. If not i'mma have to take it to the dealership.

let me know what you think. If i have to move the bluetooth dongle, i don't know where i would put it because putting it directly under the lower driver side dash would not be practical and it wouldn't be long enough to be fixed on to the center dash. Let me know. Unless i get a new mic and replace it.

This is my flickr set for the complete install.

oh also i was on the passengers seat, and i started the car and i was messing with teh radio and noticed the passenger airbag light came on and went off. and i know it does that in the beginning when u first start the car, if i remember correctly this happened after that and it worried me a little. So i started the car again a few times and the light went off properly. Should i be concerned? get it checked? let me know. I don't think anything is an issue but just thought i'd run it by, and i'm also prolly being paranoid since i did this as my first install.

FYI. i have been through hell trying to get the GROM Bluetooth dongle to work. it wasn't discoverable by my phone and then i did a reinstall with putting hte old software on the grom unit and then upgrading it and it worked but i've tried paring my iphone 4 and my roommates droid x and it is still not working. Waiting for feedback from Grom. They've been good about following up. But i'm really burnt by trying to get this to work. I will give it until after thanks giving and will return the unit.

For the moment I wouldn't worry about the dongle next to the metal frame. Wait until everything's been worked out with grom and then if it doesn't work I'd see about moving it around. At the least you could move it slightly away from the door jamb and mount it behind the plastic lower dash panel on the driver's side.... next to where the hood release is.

Oh yeah, sorry about not mentioning that white plastic clip popping out. Every time I've removed mine it's extended itself while I was removing it so i never had to manually do it. Soooooo much easier with it extended.

As for the airbag it's possible you weren't putting your full weight on the seat, or that you weren't sitting square on the seat. It may have confused the sensors which turn off the airbag if someone/something underweight is on the seat. If it's working fine now then I wouldn't worry about it.

hey man.

after much struggle i was able to get the bluetooth paired to an extent. It turns out when you're ready to pair you have to hit pair on ur phone and immediately hit next track on the Head Unit/Steeringwheel. Software is still dodgy. It wouldn't play music on USB mode when it is supposed to mute the connected USB. and I removed it and it still wouldn't play. Then i disconnected and put it into iPod mode and it worked. Also hte microphone worked on USB and was able to make calls. Works on iPod mode too. Tested the sounds and having it mounted out of the map lights it works quite well. The great thing about it is that i was able to get my iphone 4's voice control work by pressing and holding the home button and even while travelling 65 - 70mph it could hear what i was saying and would play the artist/album i wanted. Though there were plenty of popping sounds inbetween the commands and b4 playing a track. All other aps supposed on iOS 4.1 worked. AVRCP (allowing to control the music playing via bluetooth with steering wheel/headunit) as of now Does not work. I will talk to Grom peoples and see what they can do. I don't want to try to repair as i don't want to go through that hassle. Sound Quality is quite good. However, volume levels from USB stick to Bluetooth playing differe greatly. Even at iPod volume at Highest point i had to turn the car audio up to volume 15. where as the usb track would play at 5 or 6 just as loud. Hopefully they will get this worked out overtime and I will continue to give the mfeedback. I am truly hoping for a method to get the iPhone voice control to be triggered via steering wheel or head unit. preferably steering wheel. Then making calls would be much easier and greater.

I hear you on that. I currently just have my Aux Mod cable coming out of my ashtray. During normal use I just reach down and hold the home key to go to voice commands. If I have my BT headset on then I just tap the button on it to go to the voice command prompt. It takes the same amount of time to get to the prompt, but I only have to push the button once vs. holding in the home button on the phone. I would definitely love to have AVRCP on my phone with something integrated on the stereo.

well according to Grom thats supposed to work. So i'm gonna see what thats all about. Hopefully it will be possible. They have said that in about a month or two they will have SAT integration with text display and voice control activation but we'll see how this goes.

It was cool using the navigon app and having music playing in the background and it turning down the music everytime directions were read. I have a pretty nice mount too from kensington. You should check out the Kensington Assist One since you have a aux cable. you might dig it. Hopefully something can be worked out with the fixes. i'll keep you posted.
