Bluetooth calls have lots of static

New 2016 CX-5 Touring. All of the calls I make using Bluetooth have a lot of static. Playing music seemed to be fine. Surprised by the lack of quality of the calls. Is this normal and what can I do to improve it?

I do not have a similar problem making calls directly from the phone so it is not a cellular service issue.
