2002 Mazda Protege ES
Hey everybody,

I have a 2002 Protege ES MT. I had an EGR problem that I neglected. The car wont start at all anymore. I replaced the EGR Valve, coils, new plugs, and disconnected Cats as to eliminate the clogs.

Still wont start. As I turn the engine over, it will turn a few times, then come to a sudden stop. It will also "try" to fire once or twice.

Could I have damaged something internally by allowing those cats to get plugged up so bad? so severely that i need to look into a new engine?

Any ideas/ solutions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I can almost guarantee that you didn't blow your engine, lol. Is your check engine light on?

1. Swap the battery first/jump start.
2. Check the starter (remove and bench check)
3. Remove the plugs - does the engine turn easily?
4. Check for fuel (do you hear the fuel pump?) Do you have gas at the injectorfs/fuel rail?
5. Check the MAF (dirty/broken)

Let us know if you need more...

changed starter

turned engine with wrench(with plugs in) it turned hard, then easy, then hard, then easy(from 12 o clock to 5 oclock hard, then easy from 5- 7, then hard from 7 -3 etc.

I have never been able to hear fuel pump, ill try to listen closer.

how do i check for gas in the injectors or rail?

cleaned MAF

With plugs in you fight compression. Pulling the plugs let us know if the engine is 'binding up'. That it went easy/hard - may mean you lost compression in one or cylinders...

When you first turn the key on - you should hear a relay under the hood click. Then a whirr as the pump spins up (it is loudest in the back seat).

Pull your battery and take it to an auto parts store to get tested - or if you have a voltmeter you can test it yourself. Also, you replaced your coils and plugs, but your spark plug wires may also be contributing to a misfire condition (the P0300 code).

+1 on removing your spark plugs while you turn the engine. While they're out, rent a compression gauge at the auto parts store while you have your battery in there and do a compression test.

Finally, that P0480 code is a cooling fan relay failure, which is sort of odd - you didn't overheat your car, did you? If not, that code leads me to believe that you may have some sort of electrical issue - perhaps a bad ECU. That would explain your starting issue.

Thanks A lot you guys! Still no progress though.

I felt no binding up while turning the engine. I think the hard easy deal is just when i get to Top dead center. If i turn it fast it goes pretty smooth, just when i turn it really slow is when it gets hard then easy.

I have gas to the cylinders, I have spark from all 4 wires. While trying to start it still cranks for about 2 secs, then seems to fire, but never actually starts. (turns turns turns, fire, turns turns turns, fires, etc.)

Slavrens, I did not overheat. the fan still comes on... i think that issue is unrelated...

I posted on Craigslist for advise as well. One guy said I could have burnt my valves, but now he hasnt gotten back to me. Do you guys agree this could be an issue? If so advise on that?

The battery is only a year old and i have it hooked up to a trickle charger. I also hooked up some jumper cables to see if the battery was the weak link. no change in starting symptoms.

I really appreciate all the input guys. If you were in MN i would buy a couple rounds!

AND still working on getting a compression tester. i rented one but it seemed to malfunction.

i twisted it in and when i tryed to twist it out the hose spun freely, not actually unthreading it. i had to get some really long needle nose pliers to get it out. Pain in the ass so i didnt want to try the other cylinders
