Big Brake kit....will it fit?

OK...someone w/ the know-how give some insight here. Eventually I would like to put a big-brake kit on my MSP, and it seems to be very difficult to find one. I found this manufacturer;
http://www.apracingusa.com/systems.asp

Scroll down to the kits titled "AP Racing 4 Piston Caliper System 2-Piece", "AP Racing 4 Piston Caliper System 1-Piece", "Brembo 4 Piston "Lotus" Caliper System".

Does anyone know if we could get these onto our MSP's? When they offer kits like this, is there some at-home fabrication to get them to fit, or would it include necessary hardware to convert from stock setup? The kits I mentioned have rotors around 13", so they should clear the inside of the rims...if nothing else they look sweet as hell, but looks alone is NOT my main goal here. Performance is. Thanks! :)

they don't offer a kit for the Proteges. R&R Racing has a kit, Mazdaformance.com sells the StopTech kit and there is a Wilwood kit thru another vendor. just do some searches for big brake kits for more info.

thanks for the info....I've seen the wilwood kit on a P5, and the Stop-Tech Kits are listed for P5, ES & MP3's....I just hate to assume that it will fit the MSP, although common knowledge would lead you to believe that. As for Delsing, I'm sure his kit will be out before I'm in the market to buy. I've got quite some time before I get a kit, but it's nice to look now & again. Also, I figured it might be good info for others that read this thread. I emailed AP racing w/ the MSP specs in case they have a kit that can be made to fit....I'll let you know if they email me back. Thanks again...

if im not corrected ion performance sells a big brake kit with 13" rotors maybe im wrong but i thought i saw jack post a thread. I would check into it.

I dunno if this means anything when it comes to a bigbrake upgrade but keep in mind the MSP's stock rotors are 10.8" in the front and 11.0" in the back.. Larger than normal Protege rotors. One Protege bigbrake upgrade I saw just had 11" rotors.. Not too much of an improvement other than the holes...

According to Mazda's specification sheet, they are. I haven't taken mine off to verify this so I'm just going off that..

Leadfoot<SCRIPT type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register("postmenu_768402", true); </SCRIPT> - We offer a BBK for the Proteges which require a minimum of 17" wheel. (the factory ones work-MSP, MP3). Out kit uses 2-piece 13" rotors as well as 4-piston billet caliper w/ dust seals.

If you want to use AP calipers, there's only a few select that will fit the profile of the stock wheel properly. However the external dimesions of the caliper profile will determine the brackets as well as rotor size of the application.

We chose not to go the AP route for our Protege stuff b/c (1) Increased expense (2) Relatively light weight compared to our Subaru BBK's (we use AP Racing calipers for our Subaru stuff)

mine arent :)
Than you swapped your rotors or the guy at the assembly plant was having a really bad day, because Tease is right. Weirdest damn thing I've ever seen, back rotors larger than the front. But the braking surface on the front is obviously much larger.

Yeah, they do. I mean really it's only what 2/10 of an inch difference. I swapped out my rotors for the Cork Sport cross drilleds and was actually able to compare them off the car and it is strange putting the larger rotor on back. Weird thing is my friend with an 03.5 MSP claims his rotors aren't the Euro spec. I've never seen them off the car, but I find that hard to believe. Anyone know if it's true that the 03.5 changed brake designs?

I've noticed that most of the people selling crossdrilled and slotted rotors have the same part numbers for the MSP and the P5

I would be willing to bet that the larger rotor on the MSP is mostly for show, I would measure the distance from the center of the hub to the caliper and then compare it to a p5 just to see if there is any difference, if there isnt then there isnt much of a point to having the larger rotors on the MSP

The larger rotors are for better braking. The bigger rotor in the rear is to help the rear have more brake bias. I think.

iON, would your BBK fit the MP3? Or would I need to get some MSP piece to make it work right first? Say like the caliper mounting, if its different?

(yippy) Thanks again to all w/ the good input (and keeping the thread civil)....it's nice to see that there are some kits available out there (RR, Stoptech, iON, wilwood) As for the stock setup, I definitely understood & took into consideration the rotor sizes, and included that w/ the detailed specs I sent to AP Racing. Now of course, like I mentioned before, it's just a matter of getting that 75% raise so I can buy all these goodies for my car! But I'm sure this will benefit others who are looking as well.

Leadfoot- any kit that works on the ES, P5 or MP3 will fit the MSP. No worries. The hub assemblies are the same, its just the caliper/rotor combo is different.
