Better sound quality for cheap

Just wondering what can be done to the MSP to get a better sound out of it. I don't need anything monstrously loud, just a nice clean sound. What would be the first thing to be replace for better sound quality?
Do people think a replacement head unit for the MSP is worthwhile? Replacement speakers? I'm only talking about spending maybe a couple hundred at the most here, as I'm pretty tight on cash as it is. What can be done at a low price?

i'd say get a pullout tape deck and audiovox speakers all around...(yupnope)


but for real, i'm not as on top of audio stuff as i used to be, but the quality of the components in the MSP(minus the crap sub) is pretty good. I think you'll have to spend more then a couple hundred to get speakers that will sound noticiably better. Just my 2 pennies.

here is what i did. pulled out the sub rack s***. hooked up a fusion encounter 15 inch subwoofer in a sealed box. used the factory amp to power it. then i adjusted the settings on the headunit to only send frequencys like 80hz down to the sub. 220hz up to the front speakers and 80hz up to the rear speakers. few other settings on the equalizer. and it sounded damn good.

Hmm, I was thinking of maybe getting a new sub. I kinda think my system sounds crappy sometimes though. In my friends wrx with stock sound and I thought it sounded really nice, but maybe I was just impressed by the fact that I could actually hear the radio when he turned it up to just 5. I have to go at least 20 to be a decent volume. That has always bothered me for some reason. Some people say that the headunit is crappy quality, is there anything that would sound better that I could get for a reasonable price? Or is the headunit fine?

there's an option on the kenwood so that you can make it loud on only 5 volume. Hold on, i'll go out to my car a see how you do it...brb

There is a volume offset setting, but it only goes down I believe. (yupnope)

get a 4 channel amp for the factory front and rear speakers. the speakers that come with it are kinda power hungry. you can get alittle better sound by replacing them but stil the end result of adding more power will be better. MORE POWER= MORE CONTROL = BETTER SOUND QUALITY.
