Backfiring

My MP3 have always done it since I installed my OBX header. but this past week it has been really loud when I downshift? I'm at about 71K miles on the car and I bought is with 50k on it so it my be the timing belt. The plugs look fine. Any ideas???? If anyone can do me a deal on a time belt just send me a PM. thanks

I'm not sure about the backfiring, it's usually a sign of running too rich.

Yeah I just put gas in my car the other day, and that is when it started being real loud. I always run shell v-power and that is what I put in it. huh? oh well its not going to hurt the car right?

Well if you're running to rich you risk melting or clogging the cat in the midpipe. Does it smell like rotten eggs at all when you get out of the car?

I'm not running a cat, ive got an OBX header to SLS midpipe to JIC TI exhaust

No, I can't say I have.. Actually, where do you even find higher than 93 octane?!

well there is a raceway right outside the town I live in that sells race fuel, I cant remeber how high the octane level is, maybe 104 I think. I want to do it but I'm scared it will mess up my motor.

Haha, that's awesome. Don't do it man.. it's overkill. I don't imagine it would cause any serious damage, it's not like you're putting in kerosene or diesel.. but still, just stick to 91-93 octane.

What other mods do you have besides the full exhaust?

umm aem intake, eibach lowering springs, short shifter, ngk plugs and im saving up to get a forged motor built. then mabye I will go to the dark side.

Springs & shifter have nothing to do with this obviously.. but what kinda NGK plugs you got in there?

The plugs you're using could have an impact, although unlikely. Take one out and check the gap and model. If they're NGK they should be in the 5 heat range (model will read something like ZFR5F-11) and I think non-turbo gap is .044.

i got a lot more backfiring when i ran my obx and catless midpipe...i got real loud ones when i down shifted...im pretty sure it is normal without any cats

Yeah it is really loud, it sounds like someone is firing a gun. I scared the piss out of some girl last thursday. Man, the look on her face was priceless.(lol2)

Yeah I think it might have a little bit to do with the weather too. now that it's hot out the exhaust is a litlle bit hotter, and its just the right temp. to get it the fuel to pop. When I ordered my SLS midpipe I ordered one with a high flow cat but when I recieved it, it was catless so I just said screw it, and put it on my car.

I just went to O'Reilys get new plugs. Put them in and it isn't backfiring as loud or as much now.
