backfire with test pipe?.....(dumb, i know)

Hey everyone, i've not really posted a lot here, but i've been lurking for several months.
I got my MSP back in the fall, and apparently the guy before me installed a test pipe (and the genius didn't save the cat).
The O2 sensor is still there, so it's not triggering the CEL, but the car is naturally running pig rich.
When i first got the car, it would backfire only sometimes, and only when i blipped the throttle during downshifts (or heel/toe).
Now, it backfires regularly, not only when i downshift but sometimes on random upshifts as well. It's not that big of a deal, but i'd like to know if there is something i could do about it.
Logic would tell me that since it's running so ritch, i'd need to add more air....ie intake...to lean it out. I called some dealerships to see if there was anything they could do with the ECU or anything like that but to no avail.
Thanks in advance

I like Catless, and backfires lol

MSP's runs Pig rich @ Stock boost I beleve.

If you have non foulers installed and they prevent the CEL from being trigured so that shouldnt be playing a part. Well that shouldnt be causing an issue, but for sure it will have you backfiring alot more, but this is not really an issue, as far as your rides health.

What other Mods do you have???

To tune the A/F you will need a few things, but they include enigine management, blah blah blah.

If your looking for more power that wont kill your pocket, grab a FMIC upgrade, CAI, UNI Chip and boost controler. That will get you the maps for higher then stock boost, I would sugest to keep her @ or under 9.

Nah i really can't afford to go the mod route....i'm in college so every dollar is precious lol.
I was just curious as to if there was anything i could do about it......guess not. It doesn't really bother me--especially since it's not hurting anything.

Do you have hard pipes and a CAI?

If not they would be worth it for sure!!!!

Im not even turbo (Intake, Header, axl back), and she gurgles all the time, I wouldnt worrie about it.

he said he has no money so why would he buy worthless mods?
he is on stock boost and the plastic pipes are worthy enough for that low of psi.
a cai is like 250 and gives maybe 1-2 hp gains if even. i have the vibrant exhaust (only 1 high flow cat) and i still get backfire all the time. sometimes when it does it under the bridge it sounds like a firecracker... scares the s*** outa people!

dont get a CAI, seriously.
CAI DOES NOT = more air on a turbo car.

Well you can get or try to get DSM AFC a used one or new. I understand your in college and money is very vauleable, but the DSM AFC is the best thing to help it from running rich. and it comes with a preloaded super map so u won't have to dyno tune it until u get serious with the car. Its the cheapest route I think.

i have gutted cats and no muffler.....it bakcfires so ******* funny....

nothing like staring a race against anyone at a redlight and backfiring instead of revving....

I have a 2.5" midpipe with one High-Flow cat, Stock pipe to a cheap TopSpeed Muffler and it backfires here and there. I really like the sound but up in Toronto, Cops are really Anal about usings CATS on our cars.
