Aux Input, On Its Way

I've been following this forum for a while on this topic and I'm anxious to find rktktpaul's outcome of PIE's interface. I was wondering if anyone's seen this:

Note the P5 compatibility.

AutoToys.com looks like a reputable dealer/installer and they show a few applications of this AUX harness on an Audi A6:
http://www.autotoys.com/New_Tech/DI...P3_Adapter/Audi_Symphony_Aux_MP3_Adapter.html

a Honda Odyssey:
http://www.autotoys.com/New_Tech/DI...tor2/Honda_odyssey_10.4_flipdown_monitor2.htm

and a Honda Pilot:
http://www.autotoys.com/New_Tech/DIY_2000/Honda_Pilot_Flip_Down_Monitor/Honda_Pilot_Monitor_TV.htm

I don't know if they manufacture their own interfaces or if they just piece together a package for a particular application, but this looks like a viable solution.

I just got a reply from customer service at autotoys.com. The unit listed above for the P5 ONLY works with 2003-2004 models.

there are no 2004 proteges. the 2003s have the same radios as the 2002s do.

Paul,

Great news! Thanks for the work! Once it's installed, how do you activate the AUX input and what's displayed on the HU? Do you lose any functionality?

What are the odds this thing works on an '02?
It appears that no functionality is lost. The AUX input is activated by merely selecting the CD function of the radio. The module seems to overide the CD function of the HU, and it seems to think that its controlling a separate CD changer. So when using the ipod, the radio displays a disk 1 track 1 message like normal.

CD playback is still available; however, it seems to be limited to one disk playback. The only way I've been able to get playback and have the unit recognize a disk is by loading a CD and have autoplay start.

But hey, I nearly have all of my CDs on the ipod - what do I need the CD function for now!!

So do you mean that an in-dash 6 would only play by ejecting a CD, then reloading it?

Even with that, I think I'll give this a shot. Could ya make some links for the hardware you bought Paul? How much did everything cost ya? (I'll scroll back a few pages to see if ya mentioned that before)

As much as I've been able to mess with the in-dash 6 disk changer, that is correct. As I have said earlier, it appears that the PIE module take over the HU CD controls for the remote disk changer it seems to think its controlling. the only way I've been able to play a CD in the stock unit with the PIE module in place is to eject and reload the CD; you can control track selection normally.

It was about $120 with shipping. I ordered it on a Friday afternoon and received it like the following Tuesday.

I believe someone else has posted a link to discountcarstereo.com (?), who has it for about 15 bucks cheaper.

What if you hit the CD button again?
Nothing.

And if you try access different disks in the HU using the disk up/down button (station preset 1 & 2), all it does is scroll through the six disk sequence looking for a response from the ghost CD changer. It will not access the disks that are in the stock HU.

So i just set one up this weekend and it sounds great but you have to have a line level in otherwise it crackles a lot and buzzes. With the line in my ipod sounds incredable. For those of you that use an ipod, get the the belkin car charger because it has a line level out and a line volume adjustment. It is about $32 on amazon and free shipping. You can also run the RCA cables through the top of the opening near the cigrette lighter and the ashtray. Thanks again to rktktpaul for all of the research.

Did you have a chance to try this out? I'd like another opinion of this thing.

will this work on those who dont have the 6 disk in-dash cd changer?

it will definitelly work because the plug you need is still there and unused for the single CD systems, the real question is how it will behave. Cars with the 6 disc have trouble with it overriding the in dash cd changer and have to eject and reload a disc to get it to play on autoplay. I figure for those of us with a single disc, the same problem might occur, only since we only have one disc its not as much of a hassle, if you want to use the input hit the "CD" button, if you want to listen to the cd, eject it and pop it back in. The only functionality you lose with this is the cd's resume capabilities, which may or may not bother you. chances are if you go with this set up you will use your cd player a lot less anyway if you have a hdd mp3 player.

Just to clarify, this is all speculation, but feel free to try it out and let us all know, or if anyone out there has done this mod with a single cd system, let us know how it works.

The single cd seems to behave just like the 6 cd changer. After installing mine this weekend I now get cd if I insert the cd and get aux if I hit the cd button. I don't hardly ever use cd's so I don't really care. I just wanted the aux in. So far it's working and sounding great.

like the others said, it works great w/o the cd changer and the only lost funtionality is the CD resume feature. also if there is a CD already in the player and you want to listen to it you need to take it out first.

Check this out:

was updated to include this quote:

"iPOD INTEGRATION NOTICE: This CD changer interface works with Dension ICELink iPod interface and charging cradle, which allows you to directly connect and operate your iPod from your factory radio."

and gives this link:

I went ahead and ordered already. $257 with shipping... ouch! No news on delivery date yet.

If this works, it will be exactly what I was looking for; a hardwired interface to the OEM HU which cradles and recharges my iPod and also allows for iPod control through the OEM HU's CD changer interface.

I'll post an update when it arrives and I get it installed.

Wow! Recieved the package today. 24 hours from ordering and the UPS guys was at my door. Impressive.

Tackled the install this afternoon. The hardest part about installation was figuring out what my HU was hung up on. It didn't want to cooperate when I was pulling it out. Other than that, it was simply plugging the harness into the HU, plugging the other end into the Mazda-Alpine interface box, plugging the Icelink cable into the other end of the interface box, plugging the Icelink cable into the Icelink and inserting my iPod. Voila!

I just have to say the Icelink kit is awesome! Totally pleased and worth every penny. It operates through the CD changer interface and operates flawlessly with the stock HU. I have the single disk player in mine and, unlike what I've heard from the people with the 6-disk, I can go from the iPod to the CD player and back by just using the CD button. No eject, reinsert issues here! The Icelink is cool b/c it not only charges and cradles the iPod, but you can skip songs and FF/RW using the controls on the HU. When I switch functions, like to the radio or the CD player, or if I turn the HU off or the car off, the iPod shuts off automatically. When I return to it, it starts up and picks up right where it left off! Audio quality is superb.

One thing I do have to mention that the guys with the 6-disk should check out. When I plugged the harness into the back of the HU, I noticed that a few of the wires were loose and actually got pushed OUT of the harness. Using a really small flat head screw driver, I was able to push them all the way back in. It looks like a minor design flaw.

Tomorrow, I plan on figuring out where and how I'm going to mount this sucker. BTW, I have a 2002 P5 and although Logjam's website (and PIE's) don't show compatability with the 2002's, it seems to work perfectly.

Bottom line... Get one. You won't be disappointed.

i was thinking about how the aux in has a tendency to override the stock cd changers, either 6 disc or single, and i think that if you were to insert a switch that interrupts the particular wire that tells the head unit that something is plugged into the 16 pin plug, then whenever you turn the switch to off, your radio would return to normal operation and the cd resume feature would work again. I think this is the option i would shoot for when i get an mp3 player worth buying the aux input hardware for. This doesnt appear to be necessary when interfacing with the ipod car station (it probably does something similar..?) but for those with just a minijack or rca plug set up its something worth trying.

Do I have it right...?

Hey guys - I've been following this thread for a little while and I'm ready to buy... but I need to make sure I'm getting the right product.

I've got a 2004 Mazda 3 (pretty little silver hatchback) with the stock CD player, not the 6 disc changer. I want to add an AUX input. Is this all I need(besides an RCA to minijack cable, which I already have?):
http://www.logjamelectronics.com/piealpmrca.html

I've read some of you saying you got your product and it works fine, I'm just making sure I'm buying the right thing. Was it tough to install? I've never modded my car audio, should I just bring it to an installer and have them do it?

Thanks guys.
