JaLMP5 Build/Progress Thread

So I just bought DaveB rings and a Forcefed dual gauge cluster surround.

Looking back through my thread I've realized that I buy a crap ton of parts and never install them. This definitely needs to change, the wife and kids left for the next couple of days so I "SHOULD" get some time in the garage.

Just went the through this thread and love the parts/colors/ideas you have man can't wait to see a pic of all the parts on

WOW! I completely forgot to update this, thanks for the bump. I'm definitely leaning towards the SSR's and once everything is up and running I'll probably purchase them. Here's a pretty big update for those of you following this. I dropped my engine off at the machine shop mid-july and was told the turn around time was going to be 4-6 weeks, well it mid-oct and I'll be receiving my engine back this week. Only good thing about it is that because I didn't raise hell about my motor not being completed on time the shop was willing to do some head work and assembly for FREE!!!! I was looking forward to do it myself but I figure I have barely had time in the garage so I might as well take advantage of the situation.

....and here are the (low quality) pictures....

Yeah the pictures don't do the block justice, that cross hatch is beautiful. Also some may have been able to tell that the picture of the crank is before the journals were micro-polished.

So took a loooooong time to get my engine back from the machine shop and I don't really want to get into the story right now. But here are some pics of the engine assembled free of charge because of the long ass wait. I'm probably going to try and get some vacation time in order to get a majority of this stuff wrapped up so hopefully I can keep this thing updated a little better. And once I can find the damn charger for my camera I'll get better photos. Now...ON TO THE PICS!

LOL, realized I never updated it here. I'll get a more current update for you as soon as I can.

So I got some time in the garage today and did a decent amount of work on the engine. Checked oil pump clearances, packed with white lithium grease, installed to block. I was also able to sneak the rear main seal in while on the engine stand but unfortunately broke one bolt because my torque wrench unlocked and I over torqued it (FML). Most of the time was done re-dying (spelling?) all the bolts and tapping all the holes (twss). Then I went and helped a buddy lower his car and vinyl wrap his hood. < That was done because if I help him wrap his SUV then he pays for my vinyl. (He bought A LOT and I get the rest) Here's some pics!!!

And this is the vinyl wrap which was a pain in the ass and the lowering job.

Made a little bit of progress on the Protege today and hopefully a lot more in the next couple of days. Here are some things that have happened since my last update or that I may have forgot to mention.

1. Interior (dash/carpet/seats etc.) removed
2. Engine harness removed for rewiring
3. Steering Rack removed in order to "depower" the rack using the flyinmiata how-to.
4. Multiple things sent to get media blasted and some welding done to it.

One more day of forced vacation means more time for the car. I got the subframe, master cylinder and a lot of other things out of the bay. I stripped all the rust off them and some spots in the bay then primed and painted.

When I removed the rear mount in order to take the engine out the stud snapped off. So after a lot of unsuccessful attempts of removing it (and some choice words) I decided to beat the crap out of the stud with a BIG F'N HAMMER out of shear frustration and to my surprise it actually popped out.

And this is what remains of the stud...(as you can see I tried using a stud extractor.)

And this is a before and after of the engine bay, I'll be adding some clear in the next day or so. In the before pic you can see the rust on the MC and subframe as well as sporadically in the bay.

and after...

I'll try and keep this updated a little more often, I was able to get a lot done in the last week since I was forced to take vacation because I have way, way, way too much and I need to get rid of it.

Buy a new OEM one more than likely, and biking I love having power tools. Should have bought them years ago, would've made things 100% easier for the tear down.
