Autolock feature question

if you turn on the auto lock feature and leave the key in the car with all doors closed and walk away, will the car lock itself and the key inside the car? Worried that my wife will leave the key in her bag and walk away the bag in the car resulting in the phone call "honey I'm locked out of the car"
any thoughts

Impossible. If you leave the key in the car the vehicle will think you are still in there and not lock the doors. The phone call you would recieve would sound more like "honey the car got stolen, because I left the keys in it."

The Smart key system consists of a central processing unit and 3 internal sensors and 3 external sensors. By comparing the data the sensors receive, the CPU can decide where the key is located (inside or outside the vehicle). Combined with the current status of the vehicle (such as "are all doors closed?"), the CPU can make decision to allow and disallow certain actions.

To your question, NO. When the key is inside, the AutoLock will not lock the vehicle. The system does not allow you to lock it even if you physically push the black dot on the external door handle. It "knows" the key is inside!!!

If you have a key inside, AND a key outside WITH you, you can lock the door. But the car will sound 6 beeps (to let you know there is key inside) before it locks all doors.
So you CAN NOT lock the door from outside if you don't have key with you.

Fracture, as those have posted previously, the lockability of the doors plays no role with a key. If you have the GT and have the passcard, then you cannot leave a passcard in the car and try to lock it with another passcard outside the vehicle. You can take the keys from both passcards and throw them in the vehicle and still lock it.
I personally have tried to lock the car when there is a secondary passcard inside and all the locks do is pop open, and beep.

Lindyrect,
nguvanh was correct (at least with my CX9).
I am not saying you are wrong, but there may be differences in our CX9s.
I just went out to my garage to try it with one passcard in the vehicle and the other one outside driver's door to lock it. It beeped for 20 times (yes, I counted) and it LOCKED!!!
I do have autolock turned on, if that matters.

Your point about mechanical key is certainly correct. You can lock the doors regardless of passcards with mechanical keys. That is designed in case of battery failure of the passkeys.

I wonder if it an 07'/08' difference. No matter what I do the locks will not lock. Even if I try to manually lock them they just pop back open, when the ignition is off, if the other pass key is in the car.
