Auto Shifter

Alright...I have an Automatic 2002 P5. (wife won't drive a stick)
Is there anyway at all to change the shifter (lack of a better word) in this car. I see all these short shifters that look really sweet for stick shifts. But I have never seen anything different for an automatic. Just wondering.

hey i am also curious as to how you did this...my two concerns are the o/d button and the park to reverse button...your help would be greatly appreciated....this has been a nagging problem for me

Lexusviper: that knob has the button to get by the shifting lockouts on an automatic.

it runs about $96 from momo's website, but says it does not support the O/D. it also comes in black with silver/brushed accent rings

still curious on the O/D issue though

yeah i have been wanting to do this too...i know there is a how to on the forums somewhere....but im more of a visual type person so the pics....and the directions will help me alot....and as for the O/D button....i have seen a couple of pics where people just relocate the wires and buy a button or switch and relocate it to the dash or below the shifter on the panel

Do this at your own risk!!!! Try it and if you have any questions just ask. I have had no problems with mine. It is 10:00 here and dark but I took it apart and took some pics just for you guys. Yes you can keep th o/d.

The auto shifter shaft is hollow and has a plastic rod running down it the it connected to some linkages and other stuff under the shifter. When you press in the button with your thumb it pushes an tapered wedge into the handle and in turn that pushes down on the plastic rod allowing you to put it gear. All you do is remove the hand grip with the two screws at the back and pull up (but first you have to pull up some slack from the center console for the o/d button so the handle will slide all the way up and off). Now remove the black sleeve the covers the rod. Now dont s*** yourself when the thumb button comes shooting out because of its spring tension and falls on the floor, just put it aside. SEE PIC #1,2,3

Pull the white plastic center rod put of the metal one and put it away in an safe spot and dont break it. Take a hack saw and cut what you want off the top of the exposed rod. Put a damp rag around the rod at the base to catch the metal shavings. I only cut off an amount that allowed me to use the bottom screw to reinstall the shifter and thats about an inch. What I mean by this is if you measure the distance between the two screws at the back of the shifter (center to center) and then cut that off the top of the rod you can now use the top screw hole in the shifter handle in the bottom hole on the shifter rod and you do not have to make a new hole and tap it.SEE PIC #4,5

Now take the white center plastic rod and get ready to modify it. This is the part that needs the most attention. If you cut it too short you will not be able to disengage the shifter to get it into gear and a new plastic rod will be required. Cut a portion of the plastic rod off to match what you cut off the metal shifter rod. I did this mod a year ago so I dont have all the parts to show you what should come off, but if you look at pic 6,7 you will cut into the x shaped area of the plastic rod. Then you have to notch it to fit over a metal release clip located down at the bottom of the hollow metal shifter rod. I think the end you cut off the white is a solid diameter piece with a notch in it already. Make your new notch to match the on you cut off. SEE PIC #6,7

After you mod the white center rod put it back in and take the black sleeve you took off and cut the same amount as everything else off the BOTTOM of it. The hole in the black base guard did not require to be enlarged. SEE PIC #8

Now reinstall the black sleeve and put the handle back on. You must lift the handle approximately of an inch up and then put the thumb button in and then push it back down (the thumb button must be installed with the flat smooth side facing down). Install the one screw required to the handle and enjoy.

hmmmm.....seems pretty in depth, but i think once i actually get in there i'll be able to figure it out'
do you have any idea about what is involved in changing the knob...ex.o/d button...thanks for the detail...if only i had my car now....and if it wasnt in the 20's and snowin like a beotch

It is still the stock knob and o/d switch.

with the o/d button, i just ripped it out from the stock one and bought an on/off relay switch from radio shack and rewired it to that and hid the button by my seat belt clip... no one can see it.

as for the momo knob, the auto has a silver button on the top that u press down. u cant see it until u see it in person.

WARNING

this knob was a b**** to install, i wont s*** you guys.
the knob base is too thin for the metal rod shifter. u need to shave the metal rod so it is thin enough to fit the momo shifter. i used a hack saw at first (took me 3+ hours) to cut it to fit, the later, i cut off another inch or so of the metal rod and shaved it once more with a dremel. saves soooooo much time! but watch out, the metal shaft can get SUPER HOT... haha yah, i kinda burned myself by accident, oh well

but yah, thats about it. pm me with any more qs!

okay, hope u know what i mean haha. the momo shifter wont fit on the metal shifter of the car because it is too thick. u have to cut down the diameter of the metal shifter... i got a saw and made a sqaure so the momo shifter fit over it. boy was it a b****. vic said u need a di-grinder? idk what that is, but im sure itll help. gl dude. btw, sanding the metal poll wont help, itll take FOREVER, i tried it

hey, just pull out the rod and cut the top off

"hey, yup, its a 2002 auto with o/d.
well one, u need a momo auto shifter and momo boot or like pirana did, get a boot from mazda for a 5spd protege.
second, u need to get a button to replace the OD button on the stock shifter, just go to radio shack and rewire the new button, not too hard. then u gotta look for a new place for it, i just drilled a hole in the center console, below the shifter, and put the button there.
third, when u remove the shifter, ull see the metal rod with a plastice piece in the center... this is where it gets really tricky. the metal rod's diameter is too wide for the momo shifter, so u need to find a way to sand the rod down and make the circumfrence smaller... what i did was...
got a hack saw, and cut the circular rod into a square so that it was small enough to fit the momo knob on. if im mot mistaken, pirana said u need a die-grinder? idk what that is. u can try sanding the metal rod, but ull take FOREVER, i tried it, even with an electrical sander.
after u get the knob on, everything should be self explanitory

Actually, I have the same knob as L8R but mine is black. As for the hole thing, you could have brought it to a shop for them to make the hole bigger, that's what I did.
By the way, my shift knob (black momo one) is for sale, I have NEVER used it. The reason is that I didn't want to sand the white plastic rod down. So if anyone is interested, send me a PM.
