you can probably use high level inputs but that will sound like SH*t. the best upgrade is always a Head Unit, you get more power, cleaner power (somewhat), better EQ options and of course RCA Outs.
BTW if you put 2 15" in a sealed enclosure in your p5 you will have no trunck <-- (EDIT)LOL oops i mean trunk (EDIT)
Just go and get a Line convertor from best buy or radio shack or an car audio store. They run about $25 and basically you just splice into your speaker wires behind your head unit and it converts the signal and gives you 1 set of rca jacks. That is what I did and am running 1 12" Cerwin Vega Competition sub. Sounds Awesome. I agree as for high level inputs... too much interference and noise. 1 stereo shop told me they would do the whole install for $65 (that was the install of the line convertor not the amp and sub) Hope this helps.
All you need is a (LOC) Line Output Converter. That is what I used and it seems to work fine. The only problem is I have it spliced into my rear speakers and when the bass hits the rear speakers go out (no sound). But since your not going to be sitting in the back, go for it. Just make sure that you connect the LOC to the rear speaker wires and NOT the front.
I think that the rear wires are purple. Not totally sure though.
I did just that same thing . i removed the entire front sterio cab (where the climate controls are and has the Carbonfiber strips attatched ) and I wired it behind the sterio ... but if you are going to do that .. the only way to get the front panel off your car is to go behind the stereio on each side and folow the black cable which is your vent control (it makes the air flow change from top vents to bottom or to the defrost mode) BUTTT MAKE SURE you do it on both sides... then take the climate control nobs off and bingo it will pop right off and give you a hole lot of more room to work with .. then I unhooked the wire harness and i had a wiring diagram so i knew what wires to look for and presto youll be in like flynn

I would say that you've wired something wrong or you have a faulty piece of equipment. I have installed many L.O.C. and it should not cause the speakers to cut out. Look into it, it's not right.
