audio question, not car audio but it doesn't matter...

I have some logitech z680's. These things ( for computer speakers) sound awesome on a computer.

BUT, on an xbox or dvd player plugged straight into it, they do not. Why? Well, the computer has it's own treble and bass controls. Believe it or not, but logitech's highest end speakers do not have bass/treble controls! They got everything else under the sun for the dolby digital/surround crap but that. so, when a xbox is plugged into them, it sounds flat and tinny.

There are other reasons why I want to do this, but I'll spare the long story.

Is there some device, ( dont' say home theatre receiver!) that would allow me to take the optical connection from the xbox\dvd player etc into it, adjust the tone aka bass/treble, then output that ( hopefully optical again) into my z680's controller pod.

basically

dvd into -> device that equalizes it, then into -> z680

here are the speakers

I was going to use these as a mini home theatre system in the bedroom with a simple tv/dvd player. Watch movies while in be type of thing. They are more then good when equalized, small, wall mounts, remote controlled, and priced well. it would have been perfect if they had tone controls.

All they have is surround levels for each channel, delay settings, etc.

You should be able to pick up a home eq from somewhere...if you want to go cheap, you can go to radio shack. I think that's the best option...I don't know if it will allow you to use full digital though...you may have to go analog. But I'm sure with enough searching you'll find something of the like. Have you looked into maybe a piece of software hacking that might do that for the XBox?

thank goodness computers can easily utilize an eq. my laptop speakers sound like s***, so i had to do PLENTY of tweaking in winamp.

I really like these speakers, dont' get me wrong. But I am a tweaker when it comes to sound. It has to be jusssssssttttt right.

An eq would be great, but I don't know of any cheap ones that would allow an optical in, then out. And with the xbox, if I want to keep the digital.....duh, thats my only choice.

I'll keep looking.

My other option is to use something between the amp and speakers. Crossover maybe. These things do use real speaker wire.

hmmmmm.

I doubt there's anything to mod the sound for games. Medicentre, mp3's and such could be a possibility though, I'll look into it for sure.

For the Xbox your better off using a home receiver and and external speakers. I have the logitech z5300's and they just crave the Sound Blaster Audigy other wise they sound no good. Its all in the signal being fed to them. You can have the best speakers in the world but have the worst bad signal going to them and sound like crapola.

Home theatre reciever and external speakers...sounds really good...(2thumbs) you can even connect optical or co-ax directly...

I have a good stereo in the living room for what I REALLY want play. Carver/Cerwin Vega setup, 1200 watts.

But, of course that is the main tv, and often I like to take the xbox into the office, hook it up to my monitor via a vd-z3 ( HDTV res's ). Hence the reason I wanted the logitech's 680's. they sound good, I just want better :)

Maybe it's time for a new harmon kardon, or Denon system in the living room, and I'll retire the old one to my office :)

Well i have the speakers too, and really, with games, its just how the developer wants it. MY PS2 games sound fine.....i have it connected with an optical cable. I'm surprised xbox doesnt sound good. Cause i think all thier games are dolby digitally encoded. But good luck with your problem.

Yes, that's a great idea. (2thumbs) get a newer reciever for the living room, move the old one into your office. :) I don't have an office...just the guest room, I may move my PS2 into there. For now it's in the living room where the HDTV and Receiver are... (naughty)

this is true, some games sound just fine. But I always want that extra treble adjustment. I guess 12 years of DJ'ing has left me a little less of hearing :)

They are awesome little speakers, no doubt.

Are you trying to keep the sorrund sound?
If not then why does the optical connection even need to be invovled?
Is there an analog connection?

actually the promedia doesn't seem to be the thing. Tad overkill as well. the logitechs already have a decoder, that's not a problem, just bass/treble settings. And yes, 1sty, it NEEDS to be in 5.1.

But, I got another use for that klipsch thing in another room with a good stereo, but just plain dolby surround. Getting that, I could easily add dolby digital. I can't seem to find it anywhere in Canada though :(. I know creative makes the same sort of thing as well.
