Are ya'll sticking with synthetic oil?

I have three years free maintenance from Mazda. I hope the dealer uses synthetic. I use it in all my other cars.

Does the car have a maintenance light to let you know when to change it, or do you just go by miles?

Ah, Religion, Politics and Motor Oil. 3 dangerous topics in mixed company.

I'm sticking with it, partially because Mazda says so and also because I had really good luck with it in my Protege5.

From what I've heard even the non-full synthetic is a synthetic blend and the price difference going from blend to full for 0w20 isn't enough to even mess with it.

When I pulled the valve cover off my P5 at 100,000 miles with only using synthetic it looked great:

I do plan to stick with the synthetic for sure. I was just curious what others were doing.
Thanks.

Snythetic only in all my cars, including CX-5 as specified in owners manual.

I just went to the dealer for my oil change and couldn't believe the Sr. service adviser even asked if I wanted synthetic. I said of course, isn't it required? He told it me technically it isn't required but if I use the wrong oil or wrong viscosity and the engine has a catastrophic failure they could void the warranty due to incorrect oil being used. I asked, why is this even an option to use regular oil?

Silly to use the $20 oil change coupons if they are going to void the warranty.

Just another advertising gimmick, not to be taken seriously. Yes, manufacturers recommendations should be followed.

I was just surprised that the Service adviser questioned my wanting to spend more on synthetic. I made it a point to ask for synthetic. Even on their service ticket write-up the oil change was a price then the substituted the oil on the next line for synthetic and subtracted the cost of the normal oil price.

I have low expectations for dealership service advisors, so I am not too surprised.

When you find a good SA, stick with that one.

I plan on using only 0w-20 synthetic. I've only been able to find Mobil 1 0w-20 in stock locally. I went ahead and topped off using Mobil 1 for now, but does anyone know where to get the 0w-20 Castrol that Mazda recommends using? I've only been able to find 5w-20 Castrol. The manual states 5w-20 may be substituted, but 0w-20 is preferred.

The manual states for schedule 2, every 4 months or 8000 km for US/CAN. Whichever comes first.
And the Canadian manual recommends synthetic.

That's what I expected, synthetic always for CX-5. Thanks.

I remember reading an article in Popular Science Magazine in the 80s about synthetic by veteran race car mechanic Smokey Yunick. This is what convinced me to use synthetic oil. I searched and found the article.

“When you disassemble an engine that’s been run on petroleum oil, if you examine the rings and cylinder bores with a glass you’ll see ridges and scratches—that’s the wear going on. With polyol (a variety of synthetic), when you take the engine apart everything has the appearance of being chrome-plated. In the engine we ran at Indianapolis this year we used a polyol synthetic. When we tore the engine down, you could still see the original honing marks on the bearings…no wear at all. We put the same bearings back in because the crankshaft never touched the bearings. I’ve never seen that before.”

I use only synthetic, usually Mobil 1. In my Tundra, I use synthetic gear oil in the tranny and differential. At 150,000 miles, it still drives like new.

I dont doubt synthetic is better but with 153000 miles on my 02 taurus, using mostly walmart branded regular oil- it too runs like new. I doubt the engine is "brand new" inside- but it sure does run like a top. It's on its third starter and second battery. Not too shabby
:)

I'll definitely use Mobil1 with the Mazda.. those engines are very high tech.. would be foolish to take chance and go against what the manual demands.
