anyone use 5/40w oil in the p5?

I bought my p5 with 67k, with new oil in it. I ran that for 3k, changed it with chevron 5/30 and some autorx ( www.autorx.com ), and ran that for 3k. To finish off the autorx treatment, I am running chevron 10-30 for 3k. After that I will switch to synthetic, and I am thinking a 5/40 would serve better than a 30w. I would either use shell rotella synthetic 5/40 or amsoil. Is the 40w too heavy for the engine? Will there be a mileage penalty?

15W-50? Jesus that's WAY too thick.

I'm using 5W-30 and I have no burning issues, 123k miles.

I've always had a little more consumption than I have felt good about...I'm thinking I might switch to 10w40 next oil change. Maybe a slight mileage reduction, but hope that it might help out. 5w40 should be fine.

well my car had turbo at one point, i can tell its been abused...you think the thick oil might cause it to burn?

I would run a few flush deals these next oil changes to see if that helps remove the sludge buildup from the previous owners.

10W40 is the recommended oil for the EDM protege, so no bad reasons to run it at all

I'm old school about flushing out sludge...in most cases, I fear that a small amount of sludge removed from the seals is going to end up causing leaks. I used a sludge remover once and my car smoked more for the next 3000 miles than I had ever seen. I may be off, but I personally avoid those treatments.

My cars smoking when i start @ 148k miles. I am assuming it had 5w30 in it when i got it from the user car dealership. I swapped to 10w40 high mileage and smoking got slightly better. Last oil change the place had none so i went back to 5w30 high mileage and it seems to smoke more. Put some additives in the oil to swell seals and that didn't work for me. I have a feeling valve stem seals are in my future.

For you guys with smoking issues, try auto rx. I have used it in 3 cars, bought a bottle for this one when I picked it up. it's not caustic, like seafoam, it's not a solvent. You can check it out on their site www.auto-rx.com , or www.bobistheoilguy.com . I would recommend you guys try it, it's certainly not going to hurt.

Good to hear that the 10-40 is eom on edm cars. I dunno, I will do some more research on bitog. Some guys say thicker is not necessarily

I'll never put anything in my oil again... I put in an oil additive to try to reduce a leaky front main seal... and smoked a rod bearing. granted, the engine had north of 250K Km on it... but up until that additive, it was still running like a top.. a leaky top.

5W-40 should be fine, as theMAN said, its spec'd for this motor elsewhere, you'll pay a slight mileage penalty for it... but I definitely wouldn't go to 15W-50....

most people on BITOG aren't engineers either... let alone work for mazda

mazda engineers spec'd that oil for europe because of their high speed operations constantly in order for the engine to be protected better and to reduce burn off

Lol, I hear you about bitog. Place is a bit nutty. However, those guys do lotd of uos's, which don't lie, and there are some industry employees on there.

So let me be more specific: I live in socal, with mild winters and blazing summers, there's a fuckton of traffic, so lots of stop and go in high heat, and I tend to drive hard when I am not in traffic, I have some nice nice canyons nearby. Given that, would you say a 40w would protect better than a 30w, all else being equal?

40 weight will definitely protect better in high heat/high stress situations.... they're known to have better shear strength and higher flash points

it doesn't help that the P5 doesn't have an oil cooler... oil temps typically reach 230 degrees on the highway... the EDM version has the same oil cooler as the MSP to keep that down to a sane 195

Wow, really? Kinda hot. Hmm. Definately a 40w synthetic in my future. Thanks for the help.

Btw, anyone retrofit an oil cooler on there?
