I know exactly what it is now, it took some seriouse thinking but I finnaly figured it out. Its a transformer, yup, its the only one with a rotary engine so its name is rotorbot.

this is in the showroom of a Corporate Mazda building, this is also where Mazda R&D is........so IT IS MAZDA.

it's not a concept for RX-7 cause rx-7 will be 2-door.

i dont think it's ugly, and it's taped up cause it's a prototype that they have just began working on.........oh, and it is rotary.

car companies do this all the time, the frame and engine will be a car that is gonna come out in the next 2-5 yrs and they are starting to test it, to do this without spy pictures they putbody paneling and sometimes leather all over the car, the back end looks like a bmw and the front end looks like the 05 miata coming out, the roadster edition.

also even though I think the body paneling is from a miata and or a bmw/626 I do also believe that is the new rx7 platform, it is supposed to be longer and wider but flatter than the rx8 and looks about right, the extra wing door could be from them using rx8 body paneling and it is just longer

Ok well I'll let the secret out. That sir is actually a mazda rx-8.

ok lemme explain... The particular picture was taken at sevenstock inside mazda r&d. I was curious to what this was so of course I grabbed the nearest important guy and asked. When the rx-8 was first designed it done on paper. From there they make a prototype using roughly the same dimensions as on paper. It would too expensive to create a car from scratch so they make due with existing parts. You might see some volvo, some ford in there. These are all manafacturers within the Ford family, the volvo taillights are real noticable. So now the engineers have this approximation of what the vehicle will VERY roughly look like. Its also to see where platform and parts sharing will work. From there they can go on to designing a real prototype.

I guess think of it as a prototypes, prototype. Also in that room was the difference stages of the rx-8 construction. First was the drawings, then the mix/match car, then a prototype, next the rx-evolv and then the finished product rx-8. It was really cool actually.

haha i just noticed this...it has miata headlights, rx-7 front end, rx-8 hood, rx-8 doors, volvo lights, twin exhausts from rx-8, rear end from a volvo. that car was the prototype...'cause u can see real rx-8's outside

The front look like a 1999+ Miata with a body kit of an RX7... and the back looks like a SAAB....

None of the parts are from an rx-8 cuz the rx-8 didnt exist yet. The rear lights are from a volvo s40 i think. From is miata. I'm not sure what the actual chasis is. It might have just been welded together.

its a mutt the cockpit persay is from an RX8 and the back is either from a bmw or a volvo and it looks like the front came off of a miata or a ford escort. thats my take on it . none the less you can tell from all of the rivets and bondo that its a just a bunch of diffrent body parts from other cars.

uhhh buddy, when the prototype was made the rx-8 didnt exist. The display is the showing the evolution of the rx-8 all the way starting with the drawings to the finished product.

hmmm sorry, thought they were volvo. I can't be saab because thats a GM product. It's something in the ford family, i still want to say some other type of volvo but i could be wrong.
