I've been thinking that it's going to be too expensive to race the car seriously.

I'm considering a Kart, but I have a bunch of questions:

Does anyone on here race a Kart?
What racing bodies govern kart racing?
Is there a good website/forum to findout about good VS. bad karts, used karts, kart racing opportunities?
Any kart classifieds?
Can you run karts at autocrosses?
What parts of the country have active kart racing "scenes"?

Shifter kart vs. non-shifter kart? Discuss.

Thanks.
I'm sure these are newbie questions on some forum somewhere, but I don't know what forum that is...

I'm just about as big of a noob as you are when it comes to this stuff too. My friends dad has one that he built, its a 125cc honda. That thing is freaking fast! Has a carbon fiber seat, exhaust, you name it. I've been thinking about taking my savings for mods and dumping it into a nice kart, I think I'd have more fun and it'd be more worth while. I am interested in finding some good info too. Have you ever driven one before?

Eric, have you checked out the SCCA forums? That would probably be more helpful. I know nothing about karts either, sorry.

I've not looked at the SCCA forums. I wasn't sure until I talked to Shawn tonight that the SCCA had a Kart class.

We run F125 shifter karts here locally.... Should have about ten of them out this year....

Most regions have karts at autocrosses, but if you're looking for some wheel-to-wheel action I'm not sure what to search for. I have a few friends that do it; one does oval dirt tracks in Indiana, the other does road course-type kart tracks in Ohio and another one does that in MI. Search for go-kart tracks in your area, call them up and ask how to get involved. (Those indoor places are usually just for fun and have bumpers on them...not what you're looking for)

And if you think it's cheaper then racing your car, you may want to think again. My one friend just put $5k into kart racing next season.

Locally, the Woodbridge Karting club runs races at Summit Point. The only thing I don't like about kart racing around here, are how many classes there are.... I've heard that you could be on track with 30 other karts, but only be racing against two or three other karts....

I use to do it here in Oregon and Washington, I raced from about 12-18, I am now 21, I loved it but if took so much of my time, I started off with the slower carts, and when i was about 16 I moved to the 125CC shifter Cart series, Bandit class is what they called it. There are different classes just like any racing, I dont really have any good info for you since you dont live in oregon, but I belonged to the PKA Portland Karting Association, maybe you can look that up and they might have a link or something to your area.
