That's all CS4. The smoke was grey. The black background is perfect for tinting with the colors like that.

1. Open smoke picture
2. Duplicate layer
3. Apply gradient (whichever colors you want.) Blend mode "color"
4. Adjust gradient opacity, angle, compression, color, etc
5. Flatten image
6. Save
7. Job done! (stoned)
 
I made a layer for each color, changed the hue/saturation to whatever I wanted and then masked the layers to show what I wanted.

Sleeper, that third bird photo looks like he is about ready to attack the photographer. Great shot. Love the out of focus area that total isolates the bird.

Also, was it you who posted a smoke photo of santa? I think that one deserves to be reposted.
 
I set up incense in front of a black posterboard, used a long shutter speed and flashed from the side. I didn't have remote triggers yet, and I only had one flash. I'm sure I could do much better now.
 
Reminds me of the time I was experimenting with light.
