haven't posted on this thread in a while, but here's my contest entry

I went to Clemson this weekend and took a wide angle shot of the field from our seats. Nothing to write home about. And I posted it on a Clemson msg board similar to this and I got an email from the school SID (sports info dir) and he wants to use it future publications.

I'll keep you posted.

That's cool! :)

In 2004 a friend of mine took a shot of the field and gave it to the school on a cd along with some other pics. He watermarked all of them. They wound up using it on the front of media guides, preseason posters and even made a giant mural of it in their ticket office. They used it w/o giving him any credit for the pic so he got some sideline passes in exchange for the screw up. It was the same SID that emailed me. (At least he asking before using) So I told him he could it if I could get sideline passes for the game. He said he'd get back to me and asked who I would be shooting for. I told him it would be my 1st experience and I'd share anything I got w/the school.

I sure hope this doesn't fall thru.

Can you PM me the name of the contact at Clemson? I might be able to work some magic if its anyone I know. Me vouching for you might bring you one step closer to getting the field pass

Nothing special, just sharing some pics from the weekend at the Getty Villa museum in Malibu (one day before the Malibu fires):

So the school asked me who I'd be shooting for and since Im just an amateur and this is a hobby I won't be shooting for anyone. I told them I'd share anything I got w/the school. They came back and said they already have too many ppl shooting for them and I'd have to be shooting for another outlet in order to get field passes. So Im trying to work on that right now but I told them I am just too excited about getting published I sent him the pic and a couple of others. I thanked him and asked that he let me know if any are published. He said he will talk to the AD again since I gave him the pics in good faith.

Ok so I have found a webiste w/credentials and they have been in the process (unsuccessfully thus far) of gaining press passes to the games. So now they are going to work this angle and see if they can use my situation to me on the sidelines. They'd own the rights to the pics but Im in it for the experience.

Tried some off camera flash last night. Let me know what you guys think.

Funky, sorry for the late reply but work has had me very busy (I didn't even submit for this moth's contest). So I really like the fact that you are taking the flash off-camera. I think that your image are okay, but there are several things you can do to improve them without buying additional equipment.

First, the composition is a little tight. Some of the angle shots feel unnatural and off-balance.

Second, get the car a little bit farther away from the camera. The flash work is good and I don't necessarily think you need more flashes. I think one flash can give a nice effect if you make the light fall-off work with the contours of the car. Think of positioning the flash above the car firing into the ceiling. If you want a larger apparent light source use a sheet of foam-core board. Its like $3US at a craft store. Bounce the flash into the board then onto the camera. Test the placement of the flash relative to the board to make sure the flash does not spill over the sides of the board, otherwise you'll be wasting light.

Finally, play with the shutter speed a little. You can make the garage effectively dark by upping the shutter to your cameras max-sync speed. Mine is 1/500th but most are ~1/250th.

Let's see round two.
