that's money right there. excellent pics.

appreciate it. Your work is also very very good. love the snail pics, and your fly pic in the other thread is sweet as well.

What is your setup? which macro lens are you using?

i'm just using a canon 20d with a sigma 50mm macro. for lighting, i usually have a diffused off camera flash. with the snails, i was experimenting with some roscoe sampler gels i have from way back in the day and a two-flash setup wirelessly controlled. nothing too fancy. i wish i could afford the working distance of something longer than the 50mm at 1:1 though. maybe the sigma 150mm would suit me better. some day, eh?

how's the VR work for you? were all your shots handheld?

This is a great shot. I like the effect and you PP skills are clearly evident in all three images.

However, the above pic suffers because the coloring from the eye bleeds just slightly onto the eyelid and the sclera (white of the eye) on the lower right. It looks like you faded a circular selection for your mask without adjusting to the actual shape of the iris. The color also effects the key-light reflection in the pupil. There is a slight green/blue coloring which is distracting.

You might also want to consider a more natural coloring of the eye. Its pretty amazing how intense the color of most irises are from close range with good light. Let that amazing natural color show through. Finally, the I might vignette the image to bring focus more to the center. The lightness of the part just below-left of the eye muddies the composition a little.

thanks for the tips!

yeah the focal b/w option is what i used real quick in picassa. Honestly i spent about 3 mins editing if that. If you can believe i didnt sharpen at all, this lens is just money.

I see the bleeding you are talking about, i will attempt to edit that out and also try the fade affect on the exterior of the photo.

Your expertise is appreciated.

I love Picasa. I don't want to use many of the features of the "high-end" editors for most of my pictures and Picasa chooses wisely.

I went to Great Falls Park in Great Falls, Virginia after work today. I'm lucky to work just 10 minutes away but I don't make it out there nearly enough. The main goal was to hike/boulder so I only got a few pictures. Here are two that I think turned out alright.

First one is south-east of the falls where Mather Gorge straightens out for about 3/4 mile. I like this picture because no one ever takes pictures of the gorge from this angle. They always choose to shoot north-west [opposite direction] towards the falls. I never quite noticed how straight the gorge was at this point, either. Washington DC is about 5 more miles down river.

This second was a lucky grab as the clouds were quickly moving. First to make the "sun rays" effect stronger then turning suddenly to make it less strong. I took a series of shots varying the cropping of the cloud through the trees. This is my favorite.

The technique I used was to use aperture priority but set the camera to under-expose the scene by about 3 stops. I figured this was the quickest way to get the look I wanted without spending time fiddling with fully manual settings or a different metering mode.
