Any photographers in here?

I think it would look much better with more fill flash, I find the shadows around the eye, nose, and ear distracting

but you did a much better job than i would have :)
I'm pretty sure those shots are with fill flash. I don't see how he'd get that amount of lighting with the sun behind him and using a reflector.

isn't ambient light in this case a backlight? that would make the flash the main light. which means tekkie was right for requesting more fill, which would have alleviated some of the shadows.

might as well join in on the fun:

I think we all (myself included) would be happier with the results if I had remembered my second tripod. Without it I was left to place my flash into my mountain bike shoe on the ground. The flash will never be the same... those are well used shoes.

The higher flash position would help with the hard shadows. If I was really on my A game, I would have brought support for the foam-core board in my trunk. I would have bounced the flash off that to give the effect of a larger light source. This would have been especially important as the remaining sun light continued to dim.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I am going practice session for the USGP this afternoon. I feel a bit under-equipped since my longest lens is a 105mm equivalent.(hand)

no worries, the execution is there given the circumstances. the shadows don't bother me that much. what i want to see are the karate kicks!

USGP with a 105mm equivalent lens isn't nearly long enough, i don't think. do you have a local shop you can swing in and get some rented gear? i'm sure the ones in and around indy are all rented out by now though. you're going to need at least 300mm to get some decent shots unless you are right at trackside.

I remember her pics. They were amazing. Good job trying it! I wnna try that as well one day. I just have to get the right equipment.

Tonkabui - awesome pics! Are you using any magnifying filters at all? what are the settings for your shots?

Where is the USGP event t? I'll be down in Gainesville, VA - I was looking for local events but didn't see anything.

blue water shot was shot with a blue mineral water bottle and my kitchen sink. exposure was around 1 sec. at f/8 or f/11. you can check my exif data. popped the flash through the bottle at 1/64 or 1/32 power to freeze the water. it's just enough flash that the duration and power is short enough to freeze the water but not enough so that you can see motion blur because of the long exposure.

green water shot same as above, just with a green mineral water bottle.

smoke pic is shot with incense and a black background. i put an old deep red rosco filter on an off camera flash and shot with e-ttl. the flash was placed on the left side of the smoke and pointed towards the camera. that way, the flash wouldn't expose any of the background. the smoke came out a little bit on the red side due to the gel, but i took it one step further in ps and cranked up the yellow to give it the fire effect.

last shot is with a water drop on a cd. at first, i was just using my flash at roughly 180 degrees from the drop pointed directly at the cd on the opposite side. the rainbow effect was there, but it was kind of boring. then an idea popped into my head to use my gary fong lightsphere diffuser to see what would happen. the texture of the bowl acted as slits of light and gave a much more interesting effect on the water drop.

all the pics minus the smoke was shot with a sigma 50mm macro, so no magnifying filters. off camera manual flash on the water and cd pics. off camera ettl on the smoke pic.

You're not serious about asking where the USGP is, are you???? (dark)

what if I were to ask what the USGP is?

(hypothetically speaking of course)

The US Grand Prix is the only F1 event held in the US. As such, its the only time any of us will be able to get close to the greatest technology any form of racing has to offer without leaving the States. Unfortunately, the competitive nature (and holier then thou snobbery) prevents fans from getting close to the cars before or during competition. Friday was a practice day which meant general admission for $10. The practice session was just 90 minutes but all of the cars made it onto the track (I think).

Anyway, I suffer badly from SLD (Short Lens Disorder) so the pictures I took look like a chain-link and steel cable fencing with a colored blur in the middle. I literally just got out of the car and won't have anything to post tonight so you'll have to wait until tomorrow to see my colored blurs.

I was jumping around for about 30 minutes and took 63 images. Timing was an issue but I tried to overcome that by taking more images. Next time I'll try and bait a friend into doing the jumping and I can stay behind the camera.

Those are damn good cameras. I've got a DiMage 7i and it still takes better pictures than most advanced point and shoot cameras. Color quality is spactacular.
