Look, I like kids, too. But these pictures are just too tight. Kids are fun because of what they do, the faces they makes, how they interact with adults; you can't see any of that in these images. Plus, the angle of the face is a bit ackward. The lighting is flat, but overall the scene is well exposed. The girl's hair looks either wet or dirty. Curls are great, and natural-looking curls are best, but the hair just doesn't look good.

I might use a little fill flash to brighten the eyes and add a bit of drama to the image. If you can remotely trigger the flash it would be ideal to have it located about 45 degrees off axis from the camera and soffened a bit with a Omnibouce or other diffuser.

No go out and take more pictures...I hope you take my suggestions as constructive. Taking a ton of pictures is really the only way to get better.

Regards,

i agree with him, but its a matter of what u like. personally i like tight shots on the face, they reveal alot of raw emotion and really let u look into someone...

i think if u took the pictures he described then i think it would be a bit too generic... i like the step away from the typical kids playing in the park shot... but thats juts my opinion.

toodles!

Yeah, i can see what you're saying NVP5White, and thank you for the comments<SCRIPT type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register("postmenu_2776571", true); </SCRIPT> but i was trying to catch an unusual facial expressions of that girl. It was at the beach and she had her hair wet, and had mosquito bites all over her, but she was sooo serious, almost adult like. Also i only had my camera with with a basic lense with me, in the scense that i was not trying to take portraits.
But thanks for the critique, i needed it :)

Keep shooting and keep posting. I'm always glad to give a good critique.

Somebody asked me to do some shots of a girl for their website. How'd I do? I'm looking for real critiques... not just "oh, she's fugly/hot" comments. Honestly, I'm not good at taking pictures of people. It's a learning process for me.

the DOF in the second is great!,,, I never look at the cars anyway...

the first one is a little disoreienting for me... I had to turn my head to understand it, enough to take away from the pictures strengths... Do you have a level shot of this one so I can compare?

thanks. for the first one, i guess i was a bit aggressive on the angle, but i really wanted to get her legs in there. i tried doing a few landscape shots, but couldn't get the right angle. also, the shots were cutting off her legs and the way she was angled in the deep seat was making her uncomfortable. but i do understand why you had to turn your head. i did the same thing and wasn't too sure about that one.

you probably already tried this on the landscape, and it may not have had worked (english?)

landscape, right leg strait out (or whatever was comfortable) left leg using the steering wheel as a leg rest... shot from a little more from tha aft of the car. This is something I can imagine, I hope I described it well enough (it looks good to me in my head|)

I agree my imagined perfect level shots don't look right, but the angel you have is mighty agressive....

right foot on the dash?

oh yeah... I almost forgot... she's hott :)

yeah, it was a little awkward trying to get a pose out of the deep seat that she was comfy with. although she was comfortable wearing the harnesses!

Good first effort, seriously. I'm no expert at shooting people in difficult situations (especially on assignment), but I have a few suggestions.

First, you can do extreme angles but something must be there for the viewer to get their bearings. Not very clear...for example have the model tilt her head so her eyes are level. Or position the scene around her at a funky angle and the model positioned in a upright position.

Second, the hair, make-up, and clothing are uninspiring. I suppose the black extensions (or whatever that is) in the back would have looked better with black clothing of some sort. The model probably should have been in a skirt and not a top with lace. It just doesn’t send the right kind of message; not sexy enough. The make-up is a bit flat and maybe a bit too warm a shade of brown, especially with the black hair stuff.

The last picture is okay, but a 10mm or 12mm lens shot from the passenger side would have been good...except for the clashing green shades of the harness and her top.

Finally, I think the lighting should be mode dramatic. The model is well lit, but it reveals too much...doesn't leave things to the imagination. The first picture might be better if the model is not so well illuminated in her mid-section, and then lit well again where her legs come pouring out of the seat. They are great legs...

Lighting is difficult. The best next step I can recommend is to look for inspiration in magazines. I think of MPH when I think of hot shots of girls and cars. They were very tasteful while bringing the images right to the edge of what is considered acceptable to sell to minors, if you know what I mean. The shots are usually a little dark and show only a limited amount of the car, but the results are always evocative.

MPH is no more, but their wallpapers live on:

BTW, I don;t think any of these girls look particularly comfortable.

Honestly, stfu :) From what I've seen, your dam good. Those semi-candid shots of the little girl were awesome... I know you're being modest, but there people in this thread that are really talented; you being one of them I would say. Her skin tone is a little washed out, and the first pic just seems a little busy to me... I guess just a combination of the different angles and colors.

thanks for the comments and suggestions. yeah, i'm totally not an expert on this stuff. i think it takes alot of practice and great technique to pull stuff like this off. of course a good model, wardrobe and certain style will help. thanks for the suggestions. :)
