could i maybe get some input... im working on shooting my college portfolio... so any critique would be awesome!

thanks guys...

Input? How about those pictures are amazing! I especially love the beach/sun shot. The detail in the woman/table shot is awesome.

chuyler, nice picture. your technique is correct: flash used to lighten the foreground and the longer shutter will help expose the background correctly.

here's a pic i took about a week ago at a wedding.... open bar!

i picked up a Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 prime lens... it's fantastic. this image is pretty much untouched. slight curve adjustment coming out of RAW in Photoshop. Very sharp results. i'm happy with the results i'm getting.

i was using my friends 50mm 1.8 and I didn't like the build of it. i think the whole thing is made of plastic (except for the glass). stopped down, it can capture some nice photos. but it's background blur is not as nice as the 50mm 1.4. it has 5 elements inside so it creates pentagonal looking blur. as you can see the shots from the 1.4, the blurs have 7 sides, which makes it smoother.

yeah, the RAW generated from Canon's are pretty good nowadays. no complaints here. i'm waiting for Adobe Lightroom to come out next year so that it will speed up my RAW workflow.

yes, that is a nice shot. lots of detail in that one. i'm planning on picking up another prime lens (slightly longer maybe 85mm). i love the sharpness and detail.

How sharp is the 85mm 1.8 lens? It seems like there may be some compromises with that lens when they offer it for under $400.

After looking at B&H's website I'm a little envious of the wide range of Canon lenses...

02PROTEGE2.0: I shoot Nikon, too. I was wondering if you had to buy again would you choose the 50mm 1.8 or would you spend 2.5x as much and get the 1.4? Also, what does your current kit look like (body, lenses, etc).

I shoot with a D50 and the 18-70mm DX USM from the D70 Kit.

i shoot on a D70 (no s, but s frimware) and mostly use my 50 1.8 for my art/whatever stuff... i also have a 70-300 crappy G lens and a sweeeeeeeeet (gayyyyyyyyy) quantaray 18-50.

if i had the money back then, i would have gotten the 1.4.... but the 1.8 is such a steal... i dont think it was a bad desicion...

from the pictures i have seen, the 85mm 1.8 is a good lens, on par with the 50mm 1.4. it is obviously not the 85m 1.2 L quality, but it's 1/3 the price of it. there are people on the Canon forums unloading their gear all the time. i hope to pick a used one up and try it. that's where i got my 50mm from, $100 off original price and it looks and functions perfectly. do a pbase search on that lens and you can find alot of pictures of people using it.

I think I will continue to get Nikon lenses. Ken Rockwell puts it in a away I can understand when he says that all camera makers are really lens makers who also make camera bodies. This is evidenced by the fact that both Nikon and Canon also make very VERY expensive lens products for TV cameras, microscopes, and even the lithography machines used to print microchips. These sell for tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars and are made to extremely tight tollerances. Neither company makes high-end cameras for these same industries.

Anyway, I think the point is that both Nikon and Canon have a leg-up on Sigma, Tamron, etc when it comes to lenses, especially prosumer or professional lenses. I'll continue to buy Nikon gear. But that creates its own problems becuase I can't afford a lot of gear.

Now that I think of it, what happened to your 18-70mm lens? Or did you not purchase your D70 as part of a kit. Also, are you an art student? What SW do you use to convert your NEF files?

i didnt get the kit, i already had a nikon N75 film, so i just got the D70, not realizing i wasnt going to get a true 28-90mm....

i was in desperate need of an 18 with little cash to spare, so i got the quantaray.

i hate it.

but as soon as i turn 18 and get my trust fund opened up to me, i'll probably drop some dough on a d200, some lenses and other goodies, and get all nikon, the right way.

right now u could say im an art student. i cadet tech digital photography in my highschool and spend 4 of 7 class hours in the photo room.

as far as my NEF conversion, i use camera raw, 2.4 i believe, on photoshop cs2. i really would like to get my hands on nikon capture, i hear the difference is phenominal... maybe ill look into that on my next pay check... =)

I think that's a worthy education if you are working on digital equipment only AND the other three hours are spent in business and account classes. If you're going to make it in the real world there are many things you'll have to be good at besides taking the picture. Most high schools do a poor job of preparing a student to be self sufficient after graduation.

Anyway, I think you should look to improve your skills and slowly upgrade your equipment. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have access to a trust fund, but wait to spend big money until after your pictures start to make money for you. Then you spend your profits on equipment, not your own money.

I think upgrading to the new D60 (not yet officially announced) would be a good interim step. You'd get the latest sensor and processor, but none of the pro-level features you (probably) rarely use (full weather-proofing?).

Good luck and keep posting your good work

thanks. yea i'm definently working on the toher things you emtnioned, i've shot a few weddings for friends of fmaily and what not for some good money. i also shoot alot of big sports tournaments for the families of the athletes, also making some mula off that, and also i do senior photos... so i' m trying to get my hand in the business.

but really ive had the D70 since it came out and i;m getting tired of it. its a great camera and it gets the job done, but no vertical grip? no cable release? 200-1600 iso? sure its in third step incremnets... but i need slower than 200 and faster than 1600 sometimes!

its gotten em a long way, i just think its time for an upgrade.

i appreciate ur support guys, i'm currently working on a portfolio for a national contest in Nashville in a few weeks. I'll keep you guys posted!

i think they look great, i love detail shots, and kids are always fun and so lively.

the only thing negative i have to say is that the eyes could be a little sharper in the last one.

other than that, phenominal pictures!!!
