An AWD MazdaSpeed?

thats exactly it... it isnt that they CAN'T do it... because they DO do it... these cars already exist. Just not in the US.

Metal is correct. there IS a market for it here... if they were smart, they would bring these cars here on a "custom order" basis.

they fear the lack of sales and the internal costs to bring a risky project here...

if they could work these cars to the point that they were available by "custom order" only... they could sell them at premium prices at minimal losses & maximum profits....

i think i'll just retire to Germany

I've been in love with the EVOs since the 1st time i've seen them in a video game. Now with the internet, i sometimes go on kazaa and download those WRC videos just to see those drivers do what they do and i sit there in total amazement (sp?). I love those AWD turbo cars and i wish there were more in Canada. Right now we have the STi but the EVO is what i'd really like. But lately, i've had a little something for the Titatium MSP and would be the 1st one to buy it if mazda were to make an AWD version with more power; something to compete with the EVO and STi. But i guess all i can do is dream about it because like everybody says; it aint gona happen. On the other hand, i've learned today that if a car is 15 years old, you can import it to canada without too much trouble .... hmmm 1989 R32 would be interesting.

All that is left to do before importing that car is win the lottery =)

don't worry, i'll still come visit every once in a while, when i won't be driving one of my 10 cars =)

I'm not sure i'd want an AWD MSP. adding AWD to the MSP would surely screw up it's amazing handling. It miht make a better rally car, but the MSP isn't a rally car. Also the EVO's you see on WRC and the EVO's you see on the street are two totally different beasts. I only want the MSP to come with forged internals, 8.5:1 compression, 25psi boost from a T3 turbo, and a monster differential and clutch. Anyone else remember the clutches in the 3KGTVR4?? that clutch was a hog! You couldn't make it slip, you also couldn't drive it in traffic, but thats a different story. The MSP is a great FWD car, don't do anything to it to take that away.

If I recall correctly, the sport20 is listed as 4wd but for some reason I remember reading somewhere that it is actually AWD and the way the Japense badge it, is diffrent from the way we Americans do. This could be an urban legend, which as I think about it I kinda sounds like it could be... Prove me wrong! ;)

Anyway, for the money you are going to drop into the Protege why not just trade it in for a WRX? It is my opinion that if Mazda wanted to make an 4wd/AWD car and bring it to the states they would.

Also do a search on the Mazdaspeed 6.... AWD turbo'd.... looks beautiful :) again probably just an urban legend :(.

not intended to flame but to prove a point... and back you up...

the reason no Japanese hi-performance imports make it to the USA is cuz ur average american cant drive for s***, also ur average american wants comfort over performance, y do u think toyota is doing so well? ever been in a camry? corolla? god forbid i start mentioning other imports with comfort over performance (millenia, 626[J-spec was a beast, US-Spec was a shame], integra) now, lets move on into ur performance car enthusiast 15%-25% of the nation, of which it can be divided into sections, your domestic car, performace truck, and your import car... domestic car equals in to about 50%-60% (classic 60's Muscle to your current Z06 corvettes), truck in about 25% (big rig mud bogger to lowriding shows)and whatever is left to ur import car (super high performance included [ferrari, lambo]) about 15%-25%... so that leaves not very many that are actually into the import performance, you all have to remember that the import scene here is really new compared to the scene we used to have, the muscle era, who here has gone to NOPI, HIN, and other import affairs, i am sure u have noticed the wide presence of domestics and trucks... so given time the scene here will grow and we will get the imports that japan already has... now the reason they dont import here is because it is not finacially feasible... they will lose more money exporting to the US then what theyw ill make back, also, customs, emissions and other laws r restricting what they can import as well... so while they already have the AWD systems and super high performance cars, they cant import them cuz no one will buy them for the price they will set...

anyone here remember the Supra TT, 3000GT VR4, 300ZX TT, RX-7 TT... know y they stopped importing them? no one bought them, the market wasnt there for them, granted people actually bought them, but not in the flowing numbers people bought your econoboxes or domestic performance car, so they were losing money, so they stopped, cause and effect... if the market for these cars came back they would bring them in, however, there is no market so there is no import

excellent examples to back up my initial point Midnight! thats the bottom line. there is no market for these cars that is financially feasable for the manufacturers...

like I mentioned before... if they could do somesort of "custom order" program... they could maximize profits and minimize losses from lack of sales... but that again won't happen due to too many restrictions on the emissions, import tarriffs, red tape, etc...

anyways, thanks for that visual Midnight... great points

even if the mazdaspeed got AWD, think it could get in with the Talon TSI or the eclipse GSX, as far as i know its slower than those, i love the protege, i just wanna see it go places.

infact, when i went to the dealer to buy a car, i had never heard of a protege. and some of my friends hadent either, untell i rolled up, i think AWD, would not only make it faster, make it more appealing to the rally market, and the guys wanting an affordable, FAST, import, ya know, the guys would could only wish of a VR4 or a RX 7 TT or a supra TT

got to remember, these cars were built for performance in mind for a relativly cheap price, the msp is a econobox chasis with a turbo thrown in, the engine we use is bored to the max from either the 1.5 or 1.8 the protege's used to have, thats y we cant boost that much, the DSM's can crank the boost to 30 or 40 no probs and watch for them then, also, they have low compression, about 8.5 or lower, we have a higher compression so we cant boost as much... i also would love to see the protege get places as well... but we face bigger barriers than other imports, Ford being the main one... so once we get past that we can see some amazing stuff from mazda :)
