Al Gore speaks on the Iraq threat circa 92'

Its been a while since I posted a political thread because nothing has really struck my attention but this did. I know its from 1992 but in the grand scheme of things, 15 years is a short time and I wonder what made Mr. Gore change his mind so much between then and now.

I thought this video was a fake at first because Gore seems to make Iraq out to be a big problem and he seems to agree that they were in the process of amassing a nuclear arsenal and be absolutly berates Bush Senior for not taking strong action against them and thinking we can reason with them.

He also seems to make the claim that Iraq has ties to terrorists and berates Bush for refusing to take action against them. But today, he and other Democrats make it seem like terrorists were everywhere in the world except in Iraq.

The video is about 9 mins long but Its like I entered the twilight zone when I watched this. I know the world is constantly changing but has the global dynamic really changed THAT much since he made these claims?

I'm not trying to bash Mr. Gore. I think its common knowledge that I'm no fan of his but I'm just looking for some intellectual honesty.

I know this isn't the usual "street racing" or "turbo upgrade" thread but I'd really appreciate it if anyone who has a few mins to spare could watch the vid and give me their honest unbiased opinion on it. Remember, intellectual honesty.

I've taken into acct. that 9/11 had not occured yet and truth be told I don't know if going into Iraq was the right move at that time (although I don't think it was absolutely the wrong move) but if Iraq was a threat then, when did it suddenly not become a threat?

He does make some valid points on our support for Iraq some of which might have been questionable although you could say that we sided with the lesser of 2 evils. But I just can't comprehend how Iraq goes from INCREDIBLE THREAT WITH NUMEROUS TERRORIST TIES and WMD capability in 1992 to harmless, defenseless nation with no WMD's at all and very little if any at all ties to terrorist groups.

Frankly I'm glad Sadaam is gone so he can't hold us to ransom and threaten us or our allies like Iran and to a smaller extent Russia are doing now. Its clear to me that the Iraqi people want a chance to reshape their country in a way thats most beneficial to them and that their young Democracy is being constantly cut off at the knees by forces who wish the region to remain in utter chaos for their own evil desires. All in all I hope Godd prevails and the Iraqui gove and its people can stabilze their nation and our troops can come home soon.

I know not many will care about this thread and thats fine by me but I do welcome some intelligent conversation. Thanks :)

they (politicians) are all bulls*** artists who will say whatever they think we want to hear, and hopefully vote for. Then when they get into office, they do whatever the hell they want.

I think that ignorance is the only reason that people actually think that dems or reps have our best interests in mind.

Actually at the time, Iraq was a much more substaintial threat. After several years of trade imbargos and inspections, their capabilities to make war had been nearly devastated...In early 2001, if fact, Colin Powell stated that they were no longer a threat to the region, and by no means a threat to the world...So what side is lying, what side is deceitful??? And when did being a US citizen and having the responsibility of being the USA become a two sided issue..We're all in it together...We majorly F@#$ up in Iraq...Bad idea, Bad timing, Bad leadership, all around Bad Move...

15 years is not a short time in the Middle East. Look at how many things have changed in just the last 5 years. Remember just 9 years earlier when this picture was taken...

Please stop trying to justify things that are happening now by what someone said or did in another decade. Things change.

I get into fights for no reason. Even when the entire civilized world says it is a bad idea. Which effectively eliminates the productivity of the fight we are justified in fighting in another place, and stokes the flames of hatred towards me, which I, in turn, fight back even harder until the whole world thinks I'm a complete idiot, which, in fact I am.

That's more like it...

Another one fixed.

lets keep on topic and the personal attacks to a minimum here, otherwise this thread is dumpster bait.

Wow, this conversation degraded pretty quickly; I guess that proves people on the left and the right can be dicks...

Anyway, think context people. 1992 was the year after the Gulf War ended. There is a valid arguement to be had that we should have finished the job then. To jump back into the same war a decade later under the pretense of "preventing terrorism" has proved to be a sham. WMD's was the buzz word, but if we were really looking to keep them out of the hands of the bad guys, there are countries like N. Korea, Pakistan and Iran that are actively and openly joining the arms race.

And to the person who talked about hypocrisy of the left; don't forget that we have a republican president (with what was a republican house/senate) that for 7 years has spent our country's money like a retiree in vegas.

why do people continue starting politcal threads here? Havent you all figured out that when it comes to politics everyone has their own view and everyone always thinks theirs is better than everyone elses. No one is going to read someones opinion on here and think to themselves "Oh my god, he's right, im wrong, im switching sides"

Its the internet...no one is ever wrong...and they're never right either...

so stop lol

I've always wanted to walk up to someone who's car is covered in political bumper stickers at a light, or in a parking lot, and say "I was all set to go vote for the other candidate, but after sitting behind your '81 Volvo-shaped billboard, I've seen the error of my ways, and decided to vote the way you do. By the way, what brand of underwear do you prefer, I've been thinking about trying something new?"
