air intake/knocking

I just installed a short air-ram intake and now my engine makes a terrible knocking noise. I guess its "engine knock". I disconnected my battery to reset the computer, but it didn't help. A friend mentioned resetting the MAS, but I don't exactly know how. Any ideas on solving this noise problem, anyone?

I cannot even fathom a intake that adds MAYBE 4-5HP creating engine knock. Are you sure your intake isn't rattling around creating this noise? Some intakes can hit the brake master cylinder if its not fitted properly. Knock just seems out of the question.

To properly reset the ECU, disconnect the negative battery cable, hold the brake pedal down for 10 seconds to discharge the system, and maybe keep it off for another 5-10 minutes.

That was my first assumption/hope, but it didn't pan out. Not banging against anything else. Definately coming from the engine. Whats strange is that, it didn't happen immediately. I put the intake on, drove it to work, then took it off to shorten one of the pipes and drove it home. It was when I took it out that night that I heard the noise. I'll try resetting the ECU the way you said to. Thanks alot!

You are hearing a PUMP... you know that peice you removed from the stock tubing that was near the end? Thats what is making the noise... its not a knowck... more like a tick tick tick tick... you hear it when you usually are stopped? Thats what it is... dont worry.... its normal... try and reposition that peice and you wont hear the noise.

OR... it could be the pipe hitting the master cylinder.... just check to make sure.

in can try...

It had happened to me and I can make it happen, or recreate...(i dont know how to tell) that sound whenever I want from a cold start. So, I can try record it and then you people judge the sound.

Which end? What piece? Sorry. Can you be more specific? You are right though, it does sound like a "tick tick tick ". I do hear it at rest, but only with the brake off, in park. I can hear it a little when driving too.

Nothing is hitting the master cylinder.

I think he refers to the purge valve selenoid. That piece that rests in the intake near the throttle body.

Buuuut my noise is not that.....i can try explain...its like the sound of a firecracker inside the intake or engine.

Could be the purge solonid. I know the clicking yout talking about now. One of the mechnics zip tied the purge solonoid (with out me asking I might add :D) and the noise stopped, you might just need to reposition/secure it.

Is the purge solenoid that thing on the end of three hoses that was stuck into the top of the rubber pipe coming out of the throttle body via a small metal strip? If so, I took the metal strip off, fashioned an aluminum bracket, bolted it to the bracket and zip-tied the bracket to the strut crossbar. It doesn't move. I'll check it again. Thanks!

Thats what it is yeah. If I remember correctly, it was a biatch to get that bracket off while trying to hold the thing in your hand and not break it :). Hmm, I don't know what to tell ya, but I refuse to believe its engine knock!

Ok, so now we know what the purge valve solenoid is. Is it imperative that it is put back into the EXACT stock position? I have moved it around quite a bit. Can it be easily damaged?

Well lets just say that i moved mine around and when te noise STOPPED, it was facing int eh same manner as stock.... just try to use some twine or something and attach it to where the vaccum hose is on the intake.... facing the same as before... that way i had minimal to no sound.

SUCCESS! It was the purge valve solenoid. Apparently the thing clicks on and off all the time. I happened to affix it to the strut crossbar quite solidly and it transmitted that knocking noise right into the body which amplified the noise. I took it and the aluminum bracket I made for it off the crossbar and zipped it to the vacuum hose. No more noise. Its the small things that getcha. Thanks everyone for your help!

BTW, what is that for anyway?

I have the Exact same thing happening to me right now, now I know what the hell is going on. Thanks for the help on this everyone!

my new SRI

Just installed an SRI myself and am having the same problem....

I bolted a bracket to one of the battery screws for now and the clicking is gone...

What is happening now is that the piping is hitting the brake master cylinder, but only in drive at a stop/idle.

I think I'm gonna do what you guys suggested for the solenoid, but what should I do about the master cylinder thing? I can adjust the brackets that hold the SRI, but I only get about less than 1/2 inch of clearance from it. Is that enough. Sounds good to me.

Isn't it weird that they sell an SRI with no place to put the solenoid?

IMO.

I have a AEM short Ram intake and when I installed it my car would get one hell of a vibration what stopped at a light. The intake was hitting the master cylinder and all I had to do was loosen the clamps and massage it around and retighten it. The AEM comes with a bracket welded to the intake to mount the solenoid.
