Mazda 03 P5 yellow 5-speed
I had my brakes changed and flushed yesterday. Before we left the place, we were unable to get the car in gear without extreme difficulty. The clutch pedal also went to the floor and barely returned. The person replacing my brakes doesn't think my brakes have any connection to my clutch system? Is this true? Does the 2003 P5 share a maser cylinder between the brake and clutch system? She also said she didn't open the system when she flushed it. Is that possible? My car only has 40K miles on it and I previously didn't have clutch problems. Would flushing or bleeding the system fix this or what would you recommend? Should I have the same person fix/flush/bleed the system or should I take it to a Mazda dealership? Would this void my warrantee? My car is currently only able to work in 1st gear.

Thanks!!

i believe they share the same resivour. i flushed my brakes and clutch yesterday when i installed my SS brake lines. probably let air get into the master and now there is air in the whole system. while they may have bled the brakes out and your brakes feel fine. they probably didn't rebleed the clutch.

The mechanic said he didn't open the system when he flushed it so there shouldn't be any air in the system. Is that right?

they touched something.......bring it back and have them bleed the clutch for you. i would not be happy.

well then we need this guys name cuz he is a magician. Theres no way to flush your brakes w/ out opening & letting air into the reservior. Sounds fishy to me. Also, I dont think the clutch & the brakes share the master cylinfer. When I flushed the brakes on my Mazdaspeed it did not affect my clutch or tranny at all.

lol yea. . flushing the system means opening it up and getting all the old crap out. but yea the brakes and clutch share the same resivour. as long as you dont let the resiviour run dry you probably wouldnt have affected anything. i just ended up flushing everything since i was at 60k and it was time since i never did it and have SS lines to go in

threadjack, that rx7 meet wasn't as cool as it was hyped up to be

hmmm I ran mine completely dry or so I thought LOL

yeah, it was a little lame but oh well. My wife won a free Sirius coffee mug LOL. I was highly dissapointed in the lack of quality FCs there....

I just spoke to the mechanic. He called the Mazda 800 line and they told him that there's a safety (deadhead cylinder) that is engaged when he opened one of the rear calipers and all that needs to be done is to pump the clutch numerous (100) times to re-engage the clutch. Did any of you have to do this or recall anything like this?

We called a Mazda specialty shop. They said the early Mazdas may not share the same master cylinder but some later models do.

my Mazdaspeed Protege is an 03.5 so who knows LOL but my P5 is an autotragic :D

ok..here you go. the clutch and brakes DO share the same reservoir. When i dropped my new engine/tranny into the car, we had to bleed ALL brakes, and all of the clutch lines. I have never heard anything about pumping 100 times or w/e. However, to bleed the clutch, there is a little nub looking thing on the front of the tranny, kinda would be near the heat shield on the headers. Grab a friend, bleed the line. do it for a little while until you are confident enough that everything is correct.

try that. good luck.(that mechanic is an idiot)

I have auto also but according to the manual they do share resevoirs. That's different. Cost or space saving measure or both? Wouldn't the shared fluid get dirty faster? Oh well, it is what it is, no biggy, just something to note. Flush fluid if manual trans a little sooner so fluid is fresher I suppose.

Okay, so here's what happened. We tried pumping the clutch pedal and it stiffened up so that we were able to engage the shifter. My next stop would have been to have it towed to the Mazda dealer, but I figured we had nothing to lose by trying that. I didn't go to a Mazda mechanic to have my brakes changed, and I'm not sure that I will again since I had to take half a day off to deal with this even though everything worked out. The mechanic has offered to reimburse me for labor costs so I'm not totally out, and I now have new front and rear brake pads (Wagoner?).

Thanks all for your replies. Anyone know of a good certified Mazda specialist in Atlanta?

wagner pads? at my shop we've been having problems with those pads not fitting the cradle right (meaning that they will squeal)

Great!! Well, we'll have to see how they work out. I'll keep you all posted.

I dunno of any1 in ATL, but if you post in the GA Forum, we have a bunch of people from in and around ATL that can help you out. I hope you get the brake / clutch issue resolved. We're haveing a meet on the 12th (next Sunday) in Athens if you want to come out. That thread is also in the GA Section. See ya around!

The clutch and brake fluid share the exact same fluid from the same reservoir.

You need to bleed the clutch line ASAP. It's not hard, just make sure the brake/clutch fluid doesn't go dry.
To be safe make sure that there's at least 1/2 the fluid within the reservoir while bleeding.

After bleeding the clutch, you have to double check to make sure the brakes are functioning properly. This is from personal experience doing it myself.

Whoever did the original bleeding for you was incompetent.

aMaff,

Thanks for pointing out the GA forum. Looks like there are some cool people hanging out there. I got the brake/clutch issue resolved (see my previous post). Not sure if I can make it to Athens next Sunday. Never been to a car meet. What do you all do there anyway?(drink beer ;-)
