Advice for a 2800 mile road trip in a MSP?

No, I wouldn't suggest a bra...the wind flapping it will buff away at the finish. Besides, I 'm not aware of one available for our cars. Just do as posted above...a nice thick coat of wax, and leave plenty of room between yourself and the car ahead of you to prevent rock damage to front end and windshield. Also, stop at a rest area every couple of hours for 5-10 minutes with the engine running...let's you stretch your legs, too. Other than that, just carry what you would in any other car: small set of hand tools, jug of water, jumper cables, air pressure guage, etc.
Happy Motoring!

First off dont stop at kings island to ride the son of beast, it beats the hell out of you. i hurt when i get off that ride. whoever designed that ride was a moron. its not bouncing around in one certain area, its the whole damn ride, even the straight away before the loop you still get bounced around. not worth the $42 to get in just for that. the other rides though are a blast. I just got back from driving cinci to gatlinburg (307 miles), i averaged about 80 mph the whole way there and got 35.88 mpg. If i were you id bring like a pillow or something to prop your foot up to atleast change the angle you hold the gas pedal with every once and a while. we drove staight through and i could barely walk when we got out. i miss my cruise control...

nothing to worry about, I drove from Toronto to Myrtle Beach and back last year with no problems at all, just make sure you let the engine idle when you get off the highway. I did an oil change before I left and after I got back jjust to be safe. Got pretty good milage to 610km off a tank of pure highway driving.

If you have time construct an IC water sprayer so you can cool your IC down from time to time (this would be very beneficial).
I drove from Ft. Lauderdale to Tampa & back today...the IC sprayer was VERY helpful.

The Stongard clear bra thing (or whatever other company makes it) is available for both the 03 & 03.5 MSP. I should have bought one when I got my car. (hand)

No one has mentionned it... but since the msp doesn't have cruise control, make sure that your shoe is comfortable! (crazy)

I drove from chicago to traverse city to sandusky to philadelphia to newark and back. No problems.

BTW Top Dragster OWNS but it was closed most of the day when i went, finally got to go on later in the day. Millenium Force was closed also.

If you're old enough, I'd also suggest renting a car. The wear on your tires + depreciation on your car + the threat of chips, dings, accidents just isn't worth it. I put over 1k on a rental car a month or so ago for only $60 + the gas I used. I didn't have to wash it when i brought it back, it was a V6 and was quieter on the Interstates, had cruise control, and was bigger with more room for my friend and I to stretch out in. People drive crazy where I was going, and it was nice not worrying if somebody accidentally collided with me. Wait, I was in Houston ... you know what I'm talking about :P

edit: I did a mileage comparison on NADA to check used car values. If you left with 29k miles and came back with 32k, they value your car $200 less. I'm sure if you make the trip in 48 or 72 hours you could rent a car for only $100, split among 4 friends it's only $25 + gas.

It's a car.........it's meant to be driven. Drive th goddamn car to the place and don't worry about it. Why rent a rental car to drive somewhere? What was the point of getting the car then? You can get hti just as easily in your home town as you can anywhere else. Just be careful.

I would also suggest renting a car as every time I've taken the 4 hour trip up to Detroit, my leg gets a huge cramp and makes the trip very long. I can't imagine driving that far without cruise control. I would just suggest stopping every couple hours and resting yourself but don't turn off the car unless getting gas. I would also check your wiper blades as a worn out pair can make a raining trip unsafe.

dude, don't bother renting a car. i drove from nebraska to san diego. NO PROBLEMS. turbo overheating is NOT a problem. after taking off, your turbo stops spooling and you'll just cruise at regular speeds. i averaged about 85mph and my boost guage stayed in vacuum side nearly the whole time, except for times i got on the freeway. so that's not an issue. but yes, wear comfortable clothes and sandles or something.

For anything over 2k miles, I think you're better off renting a car (especially with several people because then you can split the cost).

This thread is all about daily driver vs. weekend racer...people have different opinions because they use their cars for different things.

I read an article awhile back that estimated the cost for driving a car 1 mile was around 50 cents. That included everything from wear and tear, gas, and insurance. At that rate, anything over a 1000 mile round trip makes renting a car even better.

Thanks for all the advice! Yeah, I'm not old enough to rent a car, and my friends cars are all 2 door coupes. The car is all stock, and its not going to see any boost really....just gonna cruise and try to get the best mpg I can.
