About to go Turbo

I have a naturally aspirated PR5 and im about to rebuild the motor to get ready for turbo. i have considered low compression, destroking, boring, and sleeving for the machine work and motor kit but I have heard mixed reviews about ALL of these topics. I want to hear feed back from mazda owners themselves. i chose my spool, about a t-25, and i am only going back under construction after i figure all of this out. I also want to know if stroking instead of destroking would be a good idea. thanks for the help

A local, (Alberta) boosted his 5p, I think his screen name is MMaxx, check the bottom of the forums and search AB you will find him. He is usually more then willing to share his knowledge to other Mazda owners about his trials and tribulations about his boosted P5. Good luck!!! My suggestions;

Rods, Pistons, New Bearings, Seals, Gaskets, New Oils Squrters, Clutch, Weld Diff or upgrade, Motor Mounts (front, sides, back), Intake manifold, Downpipe to 3' cat-back, engine management, tuning, appropriate gauges to monitor new engine (good a/f not a light show, egr temp, and mmm well you choose), good vac lines, turbo....GT28rs, t25 tooo small, manifold, cometic head gasket, maybe new water pump and timing belt depend in mileage....and well other then that....RIP ASHVAULT!!

I don't think you really need all that stuff unless your going big boost. Flypinoy turbo charged his car and he is pretty close to stock. He has an exhaust and he's running it with an FMU but ask him yourself. He seems pretty happy with his set up. If your going to rebuild it anyways I'd go forged pistons, rods, a new bearing set and a gasket and seal set. Shouldn't need too much more than that unless you plan on making big power then you can throw my suggestion out the window and just throw mad money at the car.

All things considered.... rods, pistons, bearings, seals, oil squirters, ems, clutch and a good tune....exhaust, intake manifold, and many others can be added after. Keep the boost on the low side till you get all complimentary mods, or if you choose run unichip high boost with supporting bottom end till you can afford ems and a good tune with other mods! You can always sell the unichip later...

appreciate the input. think i got the rebuild about figured out now. stock stroke on forged crank and forged pistons and rods. i found a package that throws in a HV oil system and beefy gaskets with the motor kit. other than that im only at 85k but i think i am going to go ahead and take care of my 120k maintenance while i got it ripped out. i also found a set of stiff urethane motor mounts. suspension wont be far after this rebuild. look out for the little red wagon out there.

you dont think that anything bigger would lag too much to enjoy on the road? i considered a t-3 but i didn't know how much that would lag on my 2.0.

Too much boost too soon is not good for traction. My Hiboost kit with IHI spools full boost 12psi at around 3500rpms. I can burn the tires off through 4th gear. There is alot of skill required to keep that under control. Hitting full boost at like 2500rpms would be pointless with a small turbo especially with a built motor. Even with the motor built I don't think that much power would be good at such low rpms. While that little T25 is running out of steam maxed out, my IHI (fairly similar to GT28rs as far a spool time and power output) is still pulling hard.

You're not going to be the only red wagon of fury in H-town so if you're going to do all that work put a worthy turbo on there. I will soon be running 18psi with built motor and tranny.

i considered a new tranny probably for late next year some time. since we're both local, do you recommend a good shop to rebuild it for me?

much Houston and Red Wagon love.

I blew my tranny and the local shop near me wanted $1700 to rebuild with me already doing the removal and re-install. I went with a salvaged 03 with 26k miles on it shipped to me for $509. I found the how-to to dis-assemble the tranny after the fact so I will just be putting the GTX 3rd and 4th gears and welded LSD in there myself.

You don't need to buy a forged crank, the engine already has one.

Check the cylinders for scoring, if you don't find any, stock bore pistons will be fine. Compression ratio depends on your HP goals, fueling and ECU control. Have you selected an engine management system yet?

have decided on fuel management but nothing decided for electronics yet. probably end up starting with a complete package like the one i saw from Greddy and upgrade as i feel needed from there.
i want to land this car somewhere about 300 hp eventually but for now i just want to make sure the bottom end is done so that this motor wont have to come out again for a long time.

so mine will have a forged crank even if i dont own a mazdaspeed?

ill have to catch up with you later on the disassembly when i get ready for the tranny rebuild.

is fairly easy to do, just payattention to detail

i did mine wihtout ever opening one in my life

have fun...
