A Rebuild Story - A Forged MP3 Motor

hey turf, I can get you redline products for a couple dollars cheaper than what one would normally pay for if you need. I am a preffered customer and get a discount. just let me know

Cool! I'm trying to determine what I want to do... I'm using Redline right now... but for some reason the tranny is way notchier than I remember it ever being... so I'm a little confused and hence I may switch to the synchromesh if I can find it for a reasonable price around here.

oops, s*** my bad. I ment amsoil. I had redline on the brain from your last post. I used amsoil on my dads front an rear differential on his Titan and also for his first oil change. I liked it a lot. I am going to try it on my next oil change on my car. I'd put some in my tranny but I just put in Royal Purple like 13k miles ago.

which royal purple? I'm a have a source for them... just don't know jack about the products... how did it treat you?

you know I noticed that my tranny is very notchy with the redline as well. Almost like a crunch evertime I shift. Maybe we should've used the Heavyweight? however, who know wtf else might be wrong my tranny lol.

before the kartboy shifter and redline fluid i would grind 2nd all the time, but after the fluid and shifter i havent grinded except once when i was being stupid... the tranny isnt so hot in the "1-2 shift" dept anyways

I am using max-gear 75W90 from royal purple, and they also have synchromax but thats more for ATF's lubricant spec. I love the max-gear oil, and would love to try the Amsoil to compare the two. I personally like Royal Purple better than Redline, and Amsoil is supposed to be better. All the Amsoil tests I've seen place it on top, but most of the studies are done by companies backed by amsoil, but still the proof is there. If you want some amsoil, let me know cause my account is gonna be up sometime this month

Well... update.. Put on about another 400 miles this weekend.. I'm up to roughly 700 miles or better on the car now. I'm going to start tightening up the tune and pushing the timing forward some... the car is sluggish in some areas because the tune is so conservative. So I'll start remedying that now and start getting it dialed in properly. First race with the car is in 2 weeks..

1st and second are still a bit obstinate.. but sometimes they aren't bad... other times they suck... so I'm definitely still thinking about going to the Synchro-mesh to see how it treats me... we'll see! :)

Maybe you didn't put the shift forks in quite right? Sometimes they bind up if you don't play with them alittle when installing them. I know I have done it before.

didn't remove or fiddle with the 1-2 fork at all.... I pulled the shafts in and out... but that was it... sometimes it shifts completely without issue... other times it is just stubborn/notchy... At a light I'll sometimes have to try 3 or 4 times to get it to go into first... or I can push hard and it will go in, but I'm not a fan of that... so I'm not quite sure why it is the way it is... hence fluid will be my next attempt at this point.

Truf...why not trying to use stock timing map up to 28deg advanced, thats pretty conservative and good for power up top.
I can get the whole curve of the ignition timing on the laptop...

Ive seen up to 64deg advanced on my P5 but thats releasing the throttle @ high rpms

Do you have the stock timing curve?? right now mine is a little odd... it's the timing that Terry did on the car originally, it works, but may be overly conservative... it basically runs a flat 30 degrees from 1500 rpm's all the way out... and then it basically just pulls timing for boost and temperature... but under about 6 psi of boost I'm probably only moving with about 20 degrees of advance.. which is obviously pretty pulled.... So I want to go through and correct that.. I have a JandS, so I"m not too worried about detonation... the JandS is very sensitive right now and picks up noise occasionally as is, so it will definitely key in on any detonation before it becomes a real issue.

I'm also a bit overrich right now.. most of the time during boost i"m in the mid 10's.. I want to get that to mid to high 11's with a touch to 12 occasionally... with that and getting the timing right the car will liven up I'm sure.

well...30deg advanced @ 1500 i think is too much, ok give me until tomorrow, Im @ work right now and later in the night I will be in college, then i will go to the tracks, so tomorrow ill do it.

Like I said.... the curve is a bit weird.. I'll doube check to see if it is that advanced at 1500.. but who knows. I'll have to do a log one of these nights and get a record of the timing versus rpm and load and then I'll know more. But I do think it is a bit off/odd at this point... I had done some timing changes last year and had the car running better... but I reverted back to conservative maps for the new motor basically and will build new maps again soon.

Later!

Steve

She's getting there... I have to tweak a couple higher rpm and boost level AFR's yet, and I'm still trying to figure out how far I can push on timing... I'm going to try to bump boost up tonight to 10 psi and then maybe push it up to 15 yet tonight too... but all depends on how things are going. I've pushed redline up to 7,000 now, and the car does very well with it... I'm hoping to do the 10, 13, and 15 psi dynos in mid june.
