According to my 02 Protege manual, depending on driving habits that is the time to replace the Timing Belt and Water Pump. In the maintenance section it says inspect timing belt at 60,000 miles, replace every 105,000* miles.

* If the vehicle is operated in cold districts (below -18 degrees C (0 degrees F) ) , replace the timing belt at 60,000 miles.

well I have an 03 es and I just spun a rod bearing at 94 thousand miles of course I have heard it tends to happen alot with the 2.0 liters

i guess i am blessed i have a 00 1.6 with 193,000 miles on it and had to do some brake work and change the rear main seal and clutch and that is about it, i have the orginal timing belt on the car as well. I know I am taking a risk but I haven't had the time or money to change the belt, i have 3 cars and they all require work.
