4 lug to 5 lug conversion...

I'm sure this has been addressed before, but since I'm new here, I'm sure you can give me a break.

I've got my Mazda Protege LX and absolutely love it. It's a stunning looking car, but the stock wheels are a real let down. I'm really trying to keep this car as stock as possible and was looking at a set of MazdaSpeed rims.

I then noticed that they were a 5 lug pattern and I've got only 4. Is there a conversion kit available to add that extra lug? If so, would it mess up the spacing for the wheels?

If anyone has info on how to tackle this, please let me know.

Thanks.

The easiest way to convert to 5 lug is to buy all four knuckles(hub, rotor and

caliper assembly) and then switch them out. Sounds like a big job but if you

have wrenched on cars before it shouldnt take more than 90 min.

Slightly more complicated than just changing out the spindles and hubs-- there are brake issues that are created in addition. I suggest you (Neilbey) search around the forums.

You'll spend a lot less money just finding some 4-lug rims that look like the MSP rims and putting them on. To go 5-lug, you'll have to switch to 4-wheel disk brakes, which will also mean changing the master brake cylinder. It would be a nice upgrade, but when you total up all the parts (and especially the labor, if you can't DIY) you'd be better off selling your LX and just buying an ES, as they're already 5-lug.

Wow...
Gone for an hour or so and so many replies. You guys rock. I think that staying with the 4 lug will be better. Does anyone know where I can get some at a good price?

Edge Racing is pretty good.
Here's what should fit your car:
14"
15"
16"
17"
18"
19"
DUBs - Don't do it!!

There are many other sites, brands and styles out there, of course.

:D

Or you can buy a slightly damaged protege5/ES and part it out like I am doing. I'll be doing the 5 lug rear disc swap after I finish the interior swap. I'll be selling my 4 lug wheels for cheap after I finish the swap if you're interested.

i's also look at the MazdaSpeed Miata's wheels, those are 4 lug and look really good IMO.

When are you looking at doing the swap?

Probably in the spring, but I will be putting my stock wheels back on in a couple months, and would be able to sell them then.

I was looking for a set before I came across the pro5 parts car. They do look nice. I didn't know there were two different styles untill recently though.

PM me the price whenever convenient. Do you have any close-ups of the wheels? Condition of the tires?
