I heard this from a friend and confirmed it with another friend...that the engine in the 3s is actually an Audi engine. Is this true?

Sorry if this is a duplicate post, I didn't see any similar posts in my searches.

Pretty sure that's a NO. If anything it would be a ford engine (6s)

The mazda 6s is a duratec block and mazda heads. THe 3's engine in both forms are mazda. I could be wrong about the 2.3 liter.

they are both ford engines...both duratecs. they are just labaled differently for use in the mazda.

I'm sure a lot of people wish it had an Audi engine in it(rockon)

Are you refering the the 2.3 and th3 3.0 or the 2.0 and the 2.3?

NOOOOOOOO!!!! (last sound heard in office as I leap from chair and rush outside to return recently purchased 3 to dealer having mistakenly been under the impression that the car was 99% japanese)

seriously, i know ford owns Mazda, but the reason I bought the damn 3 was because I thought it was still a true japanese car. i've owned two fords in the past, both with duratec engines, both of which failed at precisely the moment my warranty expired.

i'm damned if i do and damned if i don't i guess

The engines are still very different. I believe it is only the block that is the same. The heads, electronics, pumps, ingnition, etc. are all different. Ford only owns Mazda for the cross platform parts bin. Mazda still has its own design and engineering team and they still operate as seperate companies. It is a total misconception that a Mazda is a Ford. They just share R&D and parts costs to help them be more competetive. Just like a Chrysler is not a Mercedes.

This may be true but my wife's Tribute is a dead ringer for a Ford Escape with a Mazda badge. Speaking of which would the 2.3 in her Tribute have any similarities with the 2.3 in my 3. mmmmm boosted Tribute. (hitit2)

True, but the Tribute is an old model. I believe it has been out for about 6 years now. 6 Years ago Mazda was struggling and did not have the money to build their own vehicles. They took many more Ford parts back then to help build themselves a reputable line. Look at the new CX-7, very little in common with Ford. Though many people think it looks like a Ford Edge it shares virtually no common parts. As time goes on you will see less visual and performance similarities. Engine blocks, chassis, seats, suspension and a few others I believe will be more common on global platforms. Look at the Fusion, it took the suspension from the Mazda 6 and even improved it.

i wonder where your friend's friend's friend heard it from.... his friend's friend friend of a friend?

Yeah, both the 2.0 4 and 2.5 6 were both the same. The transmissions and suspension are the same also. I believe in the 90's most of the mechanical parts between Ford and Mazda were the same.
