3" downpipe interest

Just gauging interest for exhausts. There are a few companies with down pipes but competition never hurts. I'm getting my exhaust done and want to see if ppl want the same for their msp.

ASC just got done working on Paul Walker's new R34, there's nothing really relevant there but I just had to through it in there. So they have time to work on my car and I'm getting in while I can before they get busy as usual.

Anyhow, any comments, requests, or suggestions will help. Tell me what you guys like or want. Then I'll see if it is possible for a group buy.

Specs so far:
3" off the turbo
1/2" flanges
3" high flow cat
o2 sensor and extra bung for the dyno
Thermal coating for necessary area.
Material will be steel

Right now this will be bolting up to the resonator, if that changes I'll post about it. So ppl with aftermarket cat backs, I'm not sure what is going to happen. We'll see.

High flow cat is very important. I was talking to CHP and he said it was like $2500 fine and you get your car towed because it is a federal offense.

So this is a new "S" bend/cast piece and one cat for the down pipe. The more ppl interested of course the better the deal is.

For those who have seen my i/c and piping work in person you know the quality that it is. It still amazes me every time I pop my hood for ppl and see their reaction. So this exhaust is also going to be of high quality. Here is a good quality pic of my dirty engine bay

You definitely get what you put into your car when you get something made the right way.

federal government can shove that particular document up their ass

I've always wondered what the regulation is exactly. If we get just a downpipe, is that illegal? And if we have high flow cats is that legal? Or do we have to stay with the stock stuff?

Technically, if you modify the exhuast system in anyway at all it is illegal. If it didn't come off the dealership lot like that and from the factory you can't do it. This is according to the east county area of SD. I think it is a load of crap but if you get pulled over here they will send you to the ref and who knows how strict they are. I've never been reffed before. PLEASE DON'T REPLY THAT IT ISN'T ILLEGAL and give me some document stating you can do what you want. This was straight from the pigs mouth and this is taught in the Drag Net division of the san diego city police department who specifically hunt down modified cars and street racers. They, "the law", say it illegal so they inforce it being a dick most of the time.

On a non tech side I guess you can call it, having no cat is a no no. So the safest way to have a modified exhaust is putting a high flow in there. It is big enough where it won't restrict and almost be like it was never there but no polluting or breaking the law at the same time.

So if you modify the exhaust get a kitty in there to be safe so the cops won't sweat you.

Thanks for clearing that up. It took me a minute to realize kitty = cat, what a brain I am.

One thing I forgot to ask is will the car pass smogcheck with a new high flow cat? Or do you have to swap em out all that time.

good thing i live in jersey it doesnt matter what you do to the exhaust the air here is so polluted it wouldnt matter one bit

you shouldn't have a problem with the smog check, you could probably still breath from the tailpipe.

turboge - thanks for the chime in with help.

The actual flow coming from the stock S-pipe isn't all that bad... if at all a little bit of porting and maybe an extrude hone would prove a better upgrade.

You'd be picking up maybe 3-4whp if the bends are smooth and properly designed. I have my 3" starting right at the 3 bolt flange off of the 2.5" s-pipe.

Make sure when they design the downpipe that it stays close to the chassis, it is a very tight clearance where the cat has to be placed for the stock o2 sensor to line up right. I have maybe 1-2mm of clearance between the sub-frame brace and the cat.

I'm going to probably pull my exhaust off and sell it and do some more tuning with the stock exhaust on there to see how restrictive it is.
