Mazdaspeed 6
hey everyone out there i just got my cobb ap and im boosting 21 according to the AP. i have mazdaspeed intake, hks ssqv, exhaust cutout that replaces the 2nd cat and the tune im running is stage2+ mscai 91.
this normal?
also saw smoke coming from turbo/ downpipe yesterday??
but iv heard mazdas turbos are notorious for that??

any help thanks

There are numerous links talking about smoking turbos on the Mazdaspeed6. I'll let you check out the stickies for more information on that.

As far as boost pressure goes, you are spiking just a little bit. With the AP if you take some datalogs in 3rd gear at wide-open throttle, you will see the boost spike up to about 21psi but then you'll probably drop to 19.5-20psi. This is normal.

Yeah the K04's are worthless for anything over like 18psi, they don't create any more power and just blow smoke.

That isn't true. The threshold for efficiency on this turbo is between 20 and 20.5 depending on a lot of variables.

yeah I spiked up to 22.5 on some WOT pulls a couple of days ago. I'm running the Stage2+SF 93 map and I have a Cobb SF, Forge BPV, custom TEst pipe, and 3" exhaust all the way back form the test pipe. I'm holding at about 18psi

im prob gona get a ap for christmas but dont have to many mods...prob run stage1+93 map...wondering can i set the boost for 17psi? or just does what ever it wants to do lol i dont want to go that much higher lol anyways cant wait for wot/launch control lol

Unless you're adept at custom ECU tuning, you will need to run an off-the-shelf map which have predetermined boost levels. Most are around 17 to 18psi.

You can adjust your boost targets in ATR, but you'll need to really read up on how the software works and potential consequences of the changes you make. And, to be honest, LC and FFS is cool, but I rarely use it.

WOW(loser)

smokin turbo has nothing to do with how much boost your pushin.

read them stickies people!

if you are running a turbo past its efficiency for too long, yes it will smoke due to cooked and/or worn bearings. and with that comes oil blowby past the seals, then oil gets burned off in the exhaust, which creates smoke, so boost does have something to do with smoking turbos in certain situation.

i dont care what anyone say. the K04 is out of its effeiciency at 19psi. yea it'll make boost to 22-24psi, but CFMs aint changing(increaseing) much if anything. its borderline from the factory.

You're both right (to a point). In the case of the notorious smoking turbos for the MS3/MS6/CX-7, the extra boost doesn't have anything to do with that.

Agreed. To my understanding from most of the stuff ive read on the issue. Is that the smokey turbo syndrome is a PCV issue.

Again, thats just what i see come up a lot with the smokey turbo discussions.

I have never dug into the speed6 motor myself to do my own reseach.

Right now it's being tossed around between the PCV issue and the inferior seals on the earlier model K04s. Since my replacement, mine hasn't smoked one bit, and I still have the standard PCV system on there.
