2023 CX-5 Steering Column Click

2023 CX5 with a clicking/tapping noise under the driver dash, sounds like it comes from the steering column area. Only 6500 miles so under warranty. I took it into the dealership today and tech took it for 2 drives and heard nothing. I took a 10min test drive with him and heard it probably 20+ times. I have plenty of video where the click is audible but it certainly doesn't help if the tech can't hear what I hear or what's in the video.

It sounds like metal on metal click, like something is loose or colliding - mostly heard on rougher roads and any changes in direction or speed. Anybody have any thoughts as to what this might be? It definitely sounds like it's coming from inside the car, under the dash, which I would think rules out anything suspension related.

"It ended up being some tube or wire behind the dash, down by the drivers footwell area, and the tube or whatever was hitting against the steering column on bumps - they put styrofoam around it to stop the noise cause they said it’s routed correctly." I saw someone on another thread say this, but not sure if they were hearing the same noise or what tube they are referring to. Could this be it?

on the older models there was a bolt part of the steering colimns which was not tight enough. Known issue. There was a video on yotube. May be worth a check

Try readjusting the steering wheel height (all the way up and then all the way down).
See if the noise is still there or if it changes someway.

Hi! I hace exactly the same clicking noise, 2023 brand new CX-5. Did you manage to solve it!? It is driving me crazy.

Hi, I have the same noise. Driving me nuts. Did you manage to fix this? Mine sounds like it's coming from the steering wheel column, but could be wrong!

Nothing yet, really frustrating me as I can't even figure out exactly where it's coming from. Taking it back to dealer tomorrow.

Good luck! I have been already on the dealership two times. First time they didn’t acknowledge the noise. Second time, they did acknowledge it and adjusted the cowl bolts and checked that wires under the dash where properly placed. They claimed to have fixwed it. Picked it up yesterday, noise is still there. The challenge is that it is somewhat sporadic and not that loud for them to really really care. The car has only 3,000 km so it is brand new, I hope it gets worse so they can really do something. Please let me know if you have better luck than me, hopefully you do!

No luck today. They said they re-torqued some bolts on the steering column, brake pedal, braket bolts, and said the sound was gone. Within 30 seconds of leaving I had another video of the clicking noise and I honestly think it's worse now. 2 techs test drove it again and heard it and will work on it. I think a roadblock for me is the main tech for my car is older and I don't think can hear well, so if he test drives it he thinks it's all good. But when I or the younger techs drive it, it's very prominent. This was trip #4 to the dealership, patience running thin.

Sorry to hear that!
Yesterday I heard the noise without the car moving when I first moved the steer! I am starting to believe that it is something not well torqued in the steering column.

Will go to the dealership again soon and show them below video of someone who fixed a rattle just by tightening a bolt.

Thats the video I was referring to. Thank you for posting it. I self-fixed it on my 2018 which had thr same issue since new. My 2022 so far is ok thankfully.

This is the “click” I have the guy who uploaded it claims it has been fixed.
Refer to the comments, he explains what the dealership did. Seems like a simple fix.
Fingers crossed

I've had the exact same issue for the last 6 month since buying. I had tried everything, took the dash out, taped up every possible cable etc. Watched multiple YouTube videos and tried everything out there to make the dash clicking noise disappear.

I finally managed to work out what it was with my local garage. It's the windscreen on the car. Apparently multiple Mazda's from 2018 to present have this clicking noise because the windscreen was installed incorrectly during the cars manufacture. Not enough bonding was used, so when the temperature increases and the mastic / bond expands, the glass can tap against the frame of the car.

Cost to fix is £180 to have the screen removed and rebonded correctly.

I hope this helps someone out there, as the clicking / creaking noise was driving me crazy.

That's great, I also managed to pinpoint it to the corner of the windscreen and suspected it was due to expansion when it was warm outside as its not done it now the temperature has dropped. Also I noticed it would make noise after parking on an incline. Out of interest did you go to mazda or an independent garage to sort that out?

I had the exact same problems and it was driving me crazy.

I went through Mazda, who funnily enough mentioned they had three other cars in with the same issue. Mazda don't do the work themselves they send it off to a specialist company. Unfortunately I'm not sure who it is they use, but I'm sure any windscreen repair centre would be able to do the work.

you will have to get the tech and drive around for hours to get him to witness that sound. :) I have never heard a more oblivious statement used constantly to cover car issues all over US.
