2017 CX-5 Blown Rear Diff

You know, I was at the dealer a few weeks ago and asked how much they wanted to change the rear diff oil, was thinking maybe 50 or 60 bucks, after all it's way less complicated than changing engine oil and doesn't even require a filter. It might take what, 15 minutes? They quoted me $199!! I thought he misunderstood and asked again, he quoted the same price saying that it might actually be a little less. I asked why so much? He didn't really give an answer. The dealer oil must come in a gold-plated bottle or something.

To close out this thread on my 2017 CX5 GT rear diff replacement.
New brakes, rotors and fluid change along with a new set of tires and the car is running very smoooth now. (Before the tire change I was hearing noise that I thought was coming from the 'new' junkyard diff and though oh crap... :cautious: )

Just an FYI.. https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned) (which is stupid powerful for it's price) was able to write the calibration data (it's the 16 digit code highlighted below and found under the input drive shaft on the coupler) to the car.

Note: The service manual also states it can be found on the side of the coupler, this was NOT the case in either my original or the junkyard diff. So make certain you record that number before re-installing the drive shaft.

Not sure it will help but I am changing rear diff and front transfer fluid every 25k miles. I’m just using Amsoil and my year (2015) didn’t spec the expensive Mazda rear diff fluid. It is the component on mine I think has highest risk of failure. As stated.. lots of revisions of this hardware.

A lot of potential for cracked ones considering TSB ranges ‘17-‘21

As bad as my Transmission fluid was with the amount of debris I found @34K I should have known better to change out both the diff fluids right then.

Still not sure what the cause of left side output bearing failure was, but here are some break down pics of the blown diff (Still need to remove the coupler from the diff to check those bearings).

Notice: very little sealant...
