2016 Mazda CX-5 - What do you not like?

I've been driving a 2016 Grand Touring CX-5 AWD w/Tech Package for about a month now. In the last 4 years I've driven the following vehicles extensively: 2007 VW Eos; 20011 Audi A4; 2013 VW Tiguan & 2013 Dodge Journey (work vehicle). Here are my pro's & cons on the CX-5:

Pro//Con
-Love the exterior appearance// A few cheap pieces on the exterior (around spoiler)
-Headlights (tech pack) are the brightest I've ever had on a vehicle with clear cut-off point// The auto headlights turn on and off a bit more due to low light in daytime than other auto lights I've had.
- Interior styling is quite nice// The stalks and controls on the stalks (lights/wiper-washer) feel a bit cheap compared to the German brands. Also, the controls are not very intuitive for the wipers.
- The regular cruise control is rock solid & I love it. I dont even miss the adaptive because each click on the - button reduces speed by 1 mph.
- Handling is great for an suv-cuv// Its still an suv-cuv
- Transmission adapts and feel strong and the manual shifting option is quick and close to the audi & vw for the main 'floor' shifter. Ive driven a few CVT & I'll never buy or willingly drive a vehicle with a CVT again // It doesnt quite match the DSG & I'd love this vehicle with paddle shifters. Oh, and the sport mode holds a little too long, but then again I havent given it an opportunity to adapt.
- Engine is strong and adequate for even sporty driving & fun // This vehicle would really really shine with an extra 15 - 25 HP & LB Torque. The 2.0 A4 or Tiguan engine in this vehicle would be fantastic. Even with a turbo. (but still prefer the CX-5 to the Tiguan)
- I dont usually like a lot of electronics interfering and nagging me but I do like the blind-spot monitoring. If you get it - dont stop looking but it helps if you miss something or to let you know when you can safely get back in the lane after passing. // The rain sensing wipers really do a poor job of sensing when the windshield needs cleared or changing speeds.
- Nice flat floor when the seats are down and reasonably good space // Wish there was a way to flip down headrests so they didnt have to be removed to put the seats down
- I like the light colored headliner // it looks/feels kind of cheap and for me, looking out the rear quarter the light color makes me think there is a vehicle in my blind spot.

Update: The longer I use the auto-rain sensing wipers the more I dislike it and wish for a normal intermittent. Ive had much better rain sensing wipers on other cars. The voice recognition is much better than other vehicles systems Ive experienced. Rear camera picture is not great quality but the sensors have a much wider range of warning than other vehicles I've experienced.

Overall I really like the vehicle & the driving experience. And Ive never been a big fan of most Japanese cars (Ive had a 1999 Accord and a 1979 & 2002 Mazda 626 & 1984 RX-7) and I've had a few.

Paint seems thin. I already have about 6 small chips on the hood (Sonic Silver color). They don't go down to the bare metal, but none-the-less, I find them irritating. I don't tailgate, but I'm having second thoughts about not getting some type of thin clear film to protect the front end.

My 2014 Mazda 3 in black was just as bad. Numerous chips in the paint on the front end in a very small amount time. Our 2005 Mazda 6 had much thicker paint, and only accumulated a handful of chips over the 10 years we owned it.

Got my new Reflex Blue GT last week. Have about 650 miles on it. I don't like the lack of a front accessory outlet and the interface to the USB audio is pretty clunky. Lag, lag, lag and has to re-index the drive every time you turn the car off. I have a big drive with a lot of music on it but my wife's Ford indexes the drive once and stores it until you remove and replace it. I hope they come out with some sort of a firmware update. It drives like a tall happy sports car on New England curvy roads and I am having a blast driving it. I noticed a few complaints here about the firm suspension. Well, that's the trade-off. Want a soft ride? Buy a Toyota or a Subaru.

2015 GT

Not enough storage bins / cubbyholes in the front. Wimpy plastic /vinyl sun visors, having to turn the car back on to roll up passenger or back windows.

Knew it. I'm generally very careful when I enter and exit the car. Even then I see signs of wear at this place.

I'm not going to predict anything but I had an Audi 4000 that I bought brand new back in the day. Sport version with aggressively bolsters seats but cloth. Starting seeing a worn/shiny spot after a few weeks. Said it would probably wear through in a year. 8 years later when I sold the car it looked the same. Shiny spot.

- Window and door switches still don't have total proper lighting.
- Rear passenger door trims are still hard plastics.
- Still waiting on the diesel variant to arrive in the Americas.

My European CX-5 2016 GT Tech has lightning on all door switches, 1.webp
If u press the top button to prevent passenger and backwindows to stop working only driver side button light up.
All windows have one press up and down (seen some are missing that)

I also have the Diesel 2.2 150bhp. Its torque starting at 1800rpm is awesome. This car never stops to accelerate, lol.

I see some are missing driverseat memory option, european model has 2 memory position. Great to have when both me and my wife drive the car. Passenger seat also have electric adjustment, no memory or lumbar support tho.
What i found out later was that you also can store seat positions with your mazdakeys, that means u can have a total of 4 positions stored since u get 2 keys included (even my dealer did not know that ;)
When you open the car with the key the seat adjust to its stored memory position. So... 1 key for me and 1 key for my wife :)

Also read some are complaining about the heated seats not getting heat enough, neither my wife or me can use it at its highest level (3), it gets too hot !

I traded in a 2015 GT becouse i wanted the FULL LED, new interior trim and the new infotainment system with 7" screen.
Only thing i dont like is the reflection the vents on right and left side gives to the mirror, but guess i can live with that :)

Boy, people across Atlantic can really get many goodies we can't have here in the US! Some of them I don't even aware they actually exist such as one-touch up-and-down feature for all windows with light on all switches! And that Mazda i-ActivSense Adaptive LED Headlamps (ALH) is even better and more advanced than our LED headlights with AFS!

I wish the headlight switch was lit so I could tell which way to rotate the switch at night. I guess I should leave my switch in AUTO. Also, it drives me crazy having to open the center glovebox every time I get in the car to plug in my cell phone charger. Since power is constantly applied to the 12V receptacle, I forget it's plugged in and using juice. I would gladly pay for another 12V receptacle located where I could see it! Preferably near the USB ports and SD card.

That it doesn't come with door auto-lock function, for when the car moves off at a certain speed.

My previous ride had it.

This is mentioned in the manual? I think there is 7 different setting you can choose between for the auto lock. At least in the Danish version.

Really? Do you have any inside info from Mazda North American Operations?

Just subjective opinion since Mazda needs to remain competitive in a field of ever increasing choices. They have a wide range of options outside NA market to help with this before next redesign. I would be surprised if the '17 is a static copy of the '16.... like the '15 was to the '14.

Yeah, I was ready to post to check the owner's manual under 'door locks' and 'personalization preferances' but I saw X5actor was not USA and thought maybe car features are different in other parts of the world?

What do I not like? I've had mine for a week, and I love it!

Ditto! Maybe I'm just too easy to please or something, but I can't find anything to dislike about this car! I've had it about 6 weeks and every day I love it more. If I had to come up with something (just to participate in the b****-fest) I would say maybe the storage compartment in the center could be a tiny bit bigger (I'm a girl and I have a lot of stuff) LOL

Sorry best I could do!

Ha! The "b****-fest", I love it. Amazing what a bunch of (mostly) guys can b**** about when they get together. (bicker) (gah)(stooges) (laugh)

The three things I would b****-wish is:
1. Powered closing/opening passenger side view mirror. Many a time I'm driving and the passenger side mirror is closed. Arrrgh.(argh)

2. An improved better sounding audio system. The sound up front is kinda' sucky so I fade it a lot to the rear.
I'm not asking for it to be heard rumbling outside.

3. Lit window/door switches.

;) I do love a good 'fest, don't get me wrong! But I'm still in the honeymoon stage of my love affair with this car (angel)
