2010 speed 3 faster than 08

Yah its just that its a different car than yours and that you aren't used to it. It has a slightly different tune so that could be why it seems faster to you. Also the suspension has changed (I haven't driven one yet) so if it squats a little more than that could help with the sense of speed.

My buddies Forester 2.5XT with the STI turbo and tuned feels WAYYYYYYYYYYYY faster than my car but its not much if any faster, it just tucks its ass down when in boost.

All in your head (or butt). Butt dyno's are notoriously inaccurate. I don't buy that the external scoop works any differently than the large twin entrance scoop on the underside of the hood on the gen 1 cars. Cold air directly from the outside of the car either way.

The new car is 150 pounds heavier. At our general weight range ever 100 pounds is worth a tenth increase in quarter mile times.

Gearing does change things, to what extent, DNK. Wider tires may help launch, but again that is speculative.

In sum: what another poster said - if neither car is modded, just race each other.

BTW: I think the boost gauge in that car measures in bar units up to +1, rather than in psi.

The 08 is modded in these vids though...

who cares, fact is most 1st gens are modded and your not going to find stock ones. the ones that are stock most likely aren't going to be racing around town. you guys are also forgetting that every one of these cars performs differently out of the factory, no matter what year you get.

and as for the hood scoop, it wont matter in the long run if you decide you want to attempt big power because a FMIC wont utilize the scoop..... and i know someone is going to argue well an upgraded TMIC blah blah, well fact is proven you wont make as much with a TMIC, and now with the FMIC kits as cheap as 475, you would be dumb not to just purchase a front mount and be done with it.

OP, Run your dad and find out, its the only way

Shouldnt it be stock against stock though?

I would be bummed to have a 2010 and then get the new Car and Driver... GTI beat it in the comparo.

The 2010 is slower to 60, mostly because of the throttle "softening" after shifts and the slight weight gain. It's not 150lbs as someone stated earlier, lol.

It's faster after that. Just a tiny bit.

It also handles significantly better and has a better ride. It brakes about the same.

I like my 2010, even the ugly face.

Could care less what Car & Driver stated. I'd take a Speed3 over a GTI any day...

FWIW, they gave the GTI the win because it had better seats and no torque steer. Never mind that it cost thousands more, was slower, had less room, had no LSD, etc. The skidpad and brake numbers were actually really close though.

I would have considered a GTI if it was 2k LESS than a speed3, because I feel that's about what it's worth. I could probably live with the lower power, and appreciate the better fuel economy. But I still don't have enough faith in VWs to spend more on one than I did for the speed3.

Meh...what really matters is straight line 0-60 and 1/4 mile, and the Speed 3 beat the GTI handily. All the other stuff is superficial and subjective, the only point I would agree with is the torque steer in the MS3, however it doesn't really matter so much when I see the GTI way back in my rearview mirror, ha ha.

I don't know if the 08 in those videos is modded since they don't say. Plus, I can't hear an aftermarket intake, bov or dp on the 08 so, who knows. But yeah i'm glad I got myself a speed3 cuz that egg on wheels look on the gti isn't working for me. Still a nice car though. The 2010 gti looks better.

I really like the 2010 GTI....maybe my priorities have changed but I would take it over a 2010 MS3.

Around here there is almost no point in having a fast car...the cops impound you just for spinning your tires. The GTI has more than enough power.

I do prefer my 08 MS3 to the 2010 model, mainly because my model looks a little more subdued, and a little more refined. I'm not looking for hood scoops anymore, so to your point, if I had to choose between the 2010 MS3 and the GTI, I might take a serious look at the GTI, especially if I could chip it safely.

Of course, if you want gobs of power without spinning tires, AWD is the key, but that leaves both the MS3 and GTI out of contention. Mazda should seriously consider an AWD model for the MS3 and price it in line with the WRX. I would have bought one.

Alot of things have changed.. gearing being one of those. Also with your car being "older"
check for boost leek, these cars are known for that. Are you monitoring your boost levels?

i should probably invest in a dash hawk but i planed on buying an accessport soon so im guessing that would also work to
