New Mazda3 goes Zoom, Zoom with Yokohama Avid S34D tires

Yay, no more crappy Eagle RS-As (Canada at least, should be the same for the US)...

The recently introduced, totally restyled, 2010 Mazda 3 will be fitted with Yokohama Avid S34D tires as original equipment (OEM) on some models Yokohama Tire (Canada) Inc. has announced.

The Mazda 3 joins a long list of well known vehicles that have specified Yokohama tires as original equipment. The Avid S34D will be exclusive to the Mazda 3 and will be provided initially as a P205/50R17 fitment. A variety of Yokohama Avid tires are available to the public in high performance and premium all‑season versions, and all are prized for their durability, low rolling resistance and riding comfort.

Since its introduction in 2003 the Mazda3 has proven to be one of the worlds most successful cars and is well known for its excellent handling said Jonathon Karelse, Marketing Manager, Yokohama is pleased to have been chosen by Mazda to supply the Avid S34D as a proprietary tire which meets the unique demands of this popular vehicle.

Yokohama Tire (Canada) Inc. markets and distributes a full line of tires for high performance, passenger car, light truck, and commercial truck applications, as well as off-the-road tires for mining, forestry and construction applications. It maintains distribution centres across Canada to serve more than 700 independent tire dealers.

The front grill is out of proportion and awkward - it doesn't follow any lines. It wouldn't so bad if it followed either the hood lines or the headlight lines. Then, you'd have something in proportion and less "smiley." Of course, you'd have to move the foglight grill more towards the center, but you'd still be maintaining the Nagare design language.

I'm sorry to say, major design fail. What works in style on one car, does not on others. Mazda simply tried to hard in this case to bring more of the new RX-8 sports styling into their lineup.

I'm still partial to my design over the new model.

I have to disagree there. The new R3 looks waaay better than the regular RX-8.

I'm simply partial to the original smooth and elegant design. ;)

Definately nothing wrong with the original. I just think the R3 has a more agressive look to it. Looks like it should have 500 HP, too bad it doesn't.

Looks like the joker got to it....
LET'S PUT A SMILE ON THAT FACE!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

I was hoping the front would look better than that, Mazda needs to go back to basics like why the protege and the original 3 was so popular. Their styling has been lacking since the protege (exterior wise). I like the new tails on the 3 but the front is truly aweful.

2010 Mazda3 Bologna. 295lb ft diesel and a hot new 260bhp+ MPS on the way

This is Mazdas all-new 3, revealed at this weeks Bologna motor show. It aims to gun down hatchback favourites such as the Ford Focus and VW Golf with a mixture of style, value and performance. And theres a hot one on the way, too.

The outgoing 3 is Mazdas best seller at the moment, and its year-on-year sales have posted an increase every annum despite it approaching six-years old by the time this pointy new 3 hits the roads.

The styling has evolved to incorporate hints of the recent RX-8 and MX-5 redesigns, with a drag coefficient of 0.30, pretty good going for a five-door hatch.

Engines wise, the range will kick off with the usual suspects 1.6- and 2-litre petrols and 1.6- and 2.2-litre diesels, although the latter is offered in two states of tune, the higher one pushing out 182bhp, with peak torque of 295lb ft available from just 1800rpm, figures which could earn it a bit of a cult following for those requiring something with a bit of sense.

If youre willing to hang around, though, theres a new MPS on the horizon. Its set to use the same 2.3-litre turbo petrol engine as the current car, but Mazda sources assure us that power and performance will receive a boost from their current 256bhp, 280lb ft and 6.1sec to 62mph, while improved technology will cut emissions and fuel consumption at the same time. Pretty key stuff when youre peddling fast cars at the moment.

Based on the all-new 3 platform, it enjoys uprated dynamics and suspension, items already under scrutiny as the car completes development at the Ring. It's almost certain to stay front-wheel drive. The new 3 also weighs up to 15kg less than the mk1, which is pretty good achievement considering the extra safety and technology thats gone into it. Mazda has already proved intent on shaving weight from its cars with the 2, which sadly wont be getting a hot MPS model.

Our source also confirmed the new 3 MPS will be priced aggressively, so expect the benchmark in this class, the Golf GTI, to be undercut. Itll also look quite daring, apparently, eschewing the discreet looks of old hot 3 for some classic hot hatch air scoops, big bumpers and diffusers. Itll be on show at Geneva in Spring 2009, and were quite looking forward to it.

Nice, apart from that color...

So Europe gets the diesel MPS, FWD will be a little much. Now waiting to see it in Geneva, damn...

i don't think the MPS is going to be a diesel. article says it'll keep the same engine as it's got now.

they need to bring those diesels over here, stat.

i like the hatch better than the sedan...i thnk the fender lines and wedge theme work better with the hatch roofline. that side shot is sweet. agreed on the bad color, though.

If the exterior styling has been lacking since the Protege, then why (as you said) was the first-gen 3 so popular? Many Protege owners have problems with the new Mazda styling (2004 3, new 3 and 6) but each time, Mazda is advancing their styling envelope and for the most part are getting critical acclaim for it within the industry.

I love the look of the Protege (owned a P5 for a few years too). But to look at it critically, it shares design language of a mid-90's Corolla. As a company, you have to move forward with your designs and I commend Mazda on their work.

BTW I like the cleaner lines of the first RX8 but I also love the newer aggressiveness. I was looking at an R3 this morning and it was beautiful! (Right beside a Cosmo too!)

I stated the original mazda 3 including up to 09... No need to be so defensive about this... I even just got an 09 Mazda 3 to replace my falling apart P5... I'm just stating I don't like the redesign of the front of the 2010 mazda 3.

liking the hatch over the sedan. The gaping smiley face will take some getting used to though. It needs a MASSIVE FMIC! :)

that side profile is pretty nice.

i can picture it lowered with slightly larger wheels...

I just wish the front wheel arch character line was not so pronounced. I understand it ties it into the mazda family (the RX-8 and 6 have the same thing) but I just don't like how it looks on this car. Maybe a different color would change my mind.

Hopefully the front end grows on me. I like the other parts, but the front is just not doing it for me right now. I've been complaining about the massive lower front grilles for a while, and they just keep making them bigger.

I like the shape of the rear on the current model better.
If I get the next gen 3, I'll be able to justify an AutoExe front bumper, assuming they will do something aggressive with the front grill. =)
