I'm simply partial to the original smooth and elegant design.![]()
Looks like the joker got to it....The front grill is out of proportion and awkward - it doesn't follow any lines. It wouldn't so bad if it followed either the hood lines or the headlight lines. Then, you'd have something in proportion and less "smiley." Of course, you'd have to move the foglight grill more towards the center, but you'd still be maintaining the Nagare design language.

I was hoping the front would look better than that, Mazda needs to go back to basics like why the protege and the original 3 was so popular. Their styling has been lacking since the protege (exterior wise). I like the new tails on the 3 but the front is truly aweful.
If the exterior styling has been lacking since the Protege, then why (as you said) was the first-gen 3 so popular? Many Protege owners have problems with the new Mazda styling (2004 3, new 3 and 6) but each time, Mazda is advancing their styling envelope and for the most part are getting critical acclaim for it within the industry.
I love the look of the Protege (owned a P5 for a few years too). But to look at it critically, it shares design language of a mid-90's Corolla. As a company, you have to move forward with your designs and I commend Mazda on their work.
BTW I like the cleaner lines of the first RX8 but I also love the newer aggressiveness. I was looking at an R3 this morning and it was beautiful! (Right beside a Cosmo too!)
that side profile is pretty nice.
i can picture it lowered with slightly larger wheels...
