My 2010 CX-9 Cluster is acting up and I looked on ebay to get a used one to replace it with. The mileage listed in the ebay ad is far off from my cluster, my question is, is the mileage stored in my cluster or in my cars computer and when I replace my bad cluster the used one will display my trucks current mileage?

thanks

Sorry I can't answer your questions for the CX-9, but I was down this road before for a 2003 suburban I have. Clusters were a known problem for several GM models from around 2003 to 2006 or so with stepper motor issues. Because of how many vehicles were affected and the fact that GM did NOT do a recall, but only a TSB with all sorts of qualifiers, lots of folks jumped at the opportunity to fill the demand and they were all over ebay. Some sold the cluster only, it was your job to get it to work. Replacements bought online are not plug-and-play. A new cluster had to be programmed to your car with mileage and VIN#. Dealer charge was around $400 when I asked my local one. There were/are some ebay sellers who claim to be able to program it for you. All you had to do was fill out an odometer disclaimer and they would program the odometer with that mileage. No proof of mileage was required other than your word. Process seems ripe for misuse...

Again, this is not for the CX-9, but I would find it hard to believe with all the tech and computer stuff in the car that it would be plug and play without programming for your specific vehicle.

To throw a little more info into the mix, but also not related to the 9.

Over on Mazda6Club a user was doing some LED mods to his gauge cluster. Changed the backlight to blue and white essentially from the stock red; looked really nice. Anyway, he didn't want to trash his current cluster, so he bought one on eBay. When he plugged in the eBay one it worked right away, but the mileage was different... So, at least with the first gen 6, the information was tied to the cluster, which would imply programming as @tnburban stated above. Again, this is just anecdotal and not specific to the 9, but I wouldn't think Mazda would do much different between them (especially since they are both essentially Fords underneath).

Thanks but none of that helps me. Anyone have a cluster removal write up or any tips or hints I can't seem to figure out how to remove it.
