2004 Mazda Rev It Up!

I looked Atwater up: Pro Solo April 24 & 25. Tour is the next weekend, May 1 & 2.

I don't think I'm going to do 1400 miles round trip to run a stock Mazda 3 in a RevItUp event, even if I do get 8 runs!

Maybe I'll try to get away for the Atwater Tour, though! Only 6 runs, but you get to drive your own car!!!

i'll be at the dc event most likely. are the 3s 100% stock? (oem tires, etc). Looks like fun, and it'll be my first MRIU. Dan, I'm guessing you're going to the dc event, right?

Yup, gotta see if I can do better than top 10 this year... Already have a hook -up at a local Mazda dealer that is letting me take both sedan and five door automatic 3's for "test drives"....

With the 6 last year, they had springs, cat-back exhaust and the Azenis tires. I would expect something similar this year...

I just got back from my weekend trip to San Fran for MRIU...

I didn't do as well this year: 13th overall for the event, with a score of 569. The winner got a 661. Jason Hart (the pro index driver) was MUCH tougher this year. The course was pretty easy to do ok on, but there were several spots where the proper approach would have saved SECONDS!!!! not TENTHS, but SECONDS!!!!! Jason explained his line to me after I had run, and I could tell where I lost so much time to him.

FYI, the finals will be at Laguna Seca over the Labor Day weekend again this year.

Oof, I think Jason must have had a hangover on Sunday, because those of us who had done well on Saturday got totally trounced by the Sunday folks. I was about 15th overall when I left at 2pm on Saturday. Now I'm 87th. I guess that's not too bad out of 2000 competitors, but it's kind of frustrating. It's also frustrating knowing that I'd have gone a little faster if I hadn't knocked the shifter out of the "sport shift" gate on my 2nd run...

We did test drive the RX-8. Although it probably could have used a little more roll stiffness, it handled very well, with an intuitive feel. The course was more fun than the competition course, too. It was the highlight of the event for me. I was disappointed that the lines had gotten even longer after we had waited an hour to drive the RX-8, because I really wanted to try the Mazdaspeed Miata.

I got to drive an RX-8 at the MRIU finals last year, and I really liked it. I thought the power was great, and the handling better, although I DID hang it out a bit too much on one run and spun out...

i loved the test course. i floored it in the rx8 the whole way and i was totally amazed. only chance i'll have in a while to dirve an rx8 wrecklessly. that red msrx8 was so beautiful

I got on it in the RX-8 a little bit on the test course, but that dude in the Minivan was staring me down so I as afraid to really open it up. If the line wasn't so damn long for it I would have gone one more time before I left and really had some fun.

What an amazing car.

Roy you had to in that automatic haha. We didn't need to in our extra 13 hp out of the 6 speed. I tore it up like I didn't give a damn. They wanted you to drive withing your means. This meant that you could go as fast as you wanted provided you weren't skidding all over the place. The guy never gave a s*** about me doing that anyway

went to Mazda rev it up today! drove the mazda 3s, mazda 6s, and the manual rx-8. The manual rx-8 was the highlight of the event. Waited 1 and 1/2 hours for that shiet!!! But damn, that thing can HANDLE. The 50/50 weight distribution and rwd totally outhandles the msp (there was a thread on this in the msp forum). I got out of the car with this big smirk on my face. The 6s handles pretty well, but it has too much body roll. The 3s is a bit stiffer and better handling than the 6s. I really wanted to drive the mazdaspeed miata but damn, i didn't get to. The line was wayyy too long :'( !!! oh well, bet it was heat soaked anyways with that tiny ass intercooler. all in all, it was an awesome 3 hours.(yippy)

Last year at the MRIU finals, we spent most of the first day driving RX8s... They ROCKED!!!! Down on power or not, they were totally GREAT!!!! Although I DID manage to spin out on one of my runs...

The event was ok. It was a pretty small event. Especially when compared to the Auto Show in Motion that was held a few weeks back and even the volvo event.

The competition was a joke, they kept making the track wider and easier and changing it after everyone's run. How are you supposed to have a "competition" when the track doesn't stay the same? There were a shitload of people that almost beat the pro's time. It got just about to the point where you just keep the car floored and turn it.

Everyone in the morning was getting like mid 400 scores. After the first race they changed the track and took out cones and made it wider. You saw the scores go up to mid 600's and later on around noon they did it again so the scores were even higher.

If you weren't there for their "competition" it was fun just to hang out and talk with the pro drivers and beat the s*** out of the stock cars i.e. msp miata.

After they changed the track layout from the first run no one was into it and basically just wanted to get their runs over with so they could go beat on the stock cars. I think I saw more smiles coming from peoples face after the test drives than the people in line for/after their competition.

People were trying to figure out why they spent 40 bucks on an event and it didn't inclue lunch when they were at the auto show in motion a few weeks back beat the hell out of a z06 and got a ton of free crap. It's all in the marketing I suppose.

Either way, I still had fun but I think they could do better if they take notes from other events.

were they changing the track because of the heat of the track or something? i wonder if they did the same thing in alameda. that would suck, i really thought i was getting more comfortable with that style of driving.

anyway if the pro did another run of the reconfigured track, what's the difference, the index run would still be the one to beat.

They didn't adjust the track in Alameda at all, it was the same track the whole time. The pro set a new index time about every 2-3 hours with the changing conditions though.
