12A now or wait?

Hey guys,

I just wanted to get some opinions here.

The little engine in my Datsun B210 gave out on me earlier this week, and now I'm faced with looking for a new engine sooner than I expected.
One of my considerations is a rotary. I might have an opportunity to buy a 12A.

I have a standalone now (never went in the Datto, but all I need is another wiring harness), and I would rather go EFI.
Is it easy to find/buy parts for a 12A?
...Or am I better off trying to find a 13B from a second gen? The only reason I'm looking at the 12A is because I might be able to get it for less than $100, and it's not in that bad of condition.

My other option was to put together another BP with the spare parts I have left over from the Mild NA BP I'm slowly building. Eventually I would turbo it (the spare engine that would go in the Datto), but putting a rotary in it just appeals greater to me. ;)

Thanx for any input.

if you're looking to do something quick and can get the 12A cheap then go for it. but keep in mind you'll have to mess with wiring harnesses and whatnot to do the swap if you put another engine in.

if you can wait and find a decent condition FC engine preferrably a TII engine go with that one so you'll be all set with an engine and turbo thats very easily modifiable.

your car will probably weigh less too if thats any incentive to go with the rotary. that and its priceless looking at chicks faces after you ask them if they want to come over and play with your wankel

Yeah, after reading up on some stuff, I started to dislike the idea of a 12A.
That and I want to save some money. MazdaTrix has a seal kit that runs somewhere around 1800. The seller of the 12A said that after 5000 rpm, the engine would start to smoke a bit and that the seals would prolly need to be replaced. So I was like "bleh whatever."

It'll cost me less to buy the remaining parts I need to put another BP together with the spare parts I have.

Ultimately, I would like to put a 13b in there with a good turbo setup, so I'll definitely keep an eye out for one.

Mahaha. Indeed. :D

Yeah. A lightweight engine was one of the factors I was looking at.

EDIT: er the Rotor Kit is ~850. It was a complete rebuilt 12A from MazdaTrix that was $1800.

look around, try FC3S.org, the RX-7 Forum and there's some other forums you can scrounge too to find an engine. search and ye shall find

contact fc3sboy here or Chris @ SPD Racing (760)-788-9842 he has 2nd gen TII motors for great prices. I built my 12a and I like it but could be making a lot more power had I made the swap decision a while ago. gl with the project.

13B S5 or 13B-REW

i think its a little tougher to come across 13B REW's than 13BT. was there any difference really in the S5's over the S4's other than the turbo's themselves?

I've been seeing a lot of TIIs on ebay for pretty cheap, but I don't have the cash for one right now. Considering that I would have to find a rex gearbox and buy all the IC material, it would all add up. :\
When I'm done having fun with the BP in the Datto, I'll call Chris and see if SPD has any TIIs for sale.

Although, I may just turbo the BP to save time and money. Depends on how much money I would have at the time. I'd really rather go with a rotary though.

I wasn't sure if he was going to buy one new or scrounge around for used setup. And I meant S5 as long as he was going for the whole setup say out of a wrecked TII. You are right though about the engine itself. :)

And I guess the 13B-REW would just be for the novelty of it. They are hard to find indeed.

S4 has less power than an S5, lower redline by 1000 RPMS as well, I'm pretty sure. I'm thinking of doing an S4 or S5 TII swap into my first gen GSL. Still not sure what direction I want to go with the car yet, though.

S5 motors had lower compression, better turbos, but also bad things like Oil metering Pumps that retail for $1200! I like s4 motors based on value. Just port it and buy a to4r mix in microtech and huge cooling system and you'll have a party :D

And you'll have a party lol. I had no clue the OMP was $1200 on the S5. Just another reason to go premix :-p. Do you think I'd be better off going S4 TII -> first gen or S5?

check out rx7club.com in the for sale section. ive been a member for a while in that forum and i always see good deals on motors.

I love the s5 motor but for financial reasons/availability reasons it isnt as good as value IMO. It is your choice. They do have the 13b-tt from the cosmo which has the largest of any stock ports from mazda :D I do believe in premixing too. It is much more efficent but some consider it a hassle, especially if it is a dialy driver (which mine is far from). good luck to you.

Well, I finally decided on the project: 12A Turbo.

Details:
TII S5 Turbo @ 14 PSI
Rebuild/Streetport/Hardened Stationary Gears
Blow Through Setup
Rejetted Nikki Carb
FMIC

Should be a fun car :)

nice my next project is a RE cosmo motor in my 1st gen, keep us posted.
