1.6 timing advance

If I find the time, I'm going to do it this weekend.

What's everyone running? I read that bumping it up to 14 degrees is common, but I gather you can take it to 18 if you run premium. Gas out here tops out at 91 octane. What's safe? What does the job?

Catback, and piece together an intake with RX-7 flow meter are next. :)
Just something cheap to mess with until I turbo.

Skip the RX7 VAM as it does next to nothing for a 1.6.

Anything above 14-16* results in negligable results. I use 93 with 16* of advance. Since it tends to be hot in vegas, go no higher than 14* since you are limited to 91 octane. Listen for ping. If you hear any, retard the timing a bit.

Octane booster FTW, believe it or not NOS brand is great. If you don't mind a little extra cash. You can boost the octane a bit, and try 16 but as always use a timing gun and listen for a ping.

I've read this guy's reasoning... he's not making money off it or anything. He has lots of testimonials verifying it does something.

Basically, it makes no difference below 6000 rpm. But over 6000 you can get 4 at the wheels, with no other mods. I had a $35 bid on one on eBay but some bastard sniped it from me!

So I'm trying to do this today. I bought a timing light. I'm having trouble.

I'm following the directions off Miata net.

So I see this

But where the hell do I put the white out mark?
Begin by finding the big pulley on the front bottom of the engine, there should be a little hunk of plastic to the top right of it with markings on it. On the back rim of the pulley feel around until you find a notch in it. It may require turning the car on and off a few times until it is in a reachable location. When you find the mark, put a dot of White-Out or something on it to mark it (you know, the stuff that covers ink-pen errors). This photo shows the plastic thingy and the little etched timing notch.

There's no way in hell I can squeeze my hand in there to feel the back of the pulley and find the "little plastic thing" unless I remove the radiator.

Here you go, Christian. The notch they are talking about is circled in red on the attached picture. It's a PITA to find, but fortunately, it was in the shot when you snapped the pic. I also labelled a couple of timing marks.

EDIT: Is your water pump leaking? I noticed a small green blob on the alt/wp pully just above my red circle. If it's leaking, replace it ASAP.

Thanks a bunch -- will give it another go. I guess you might have to start and stop the motor a bunch of times to find that tiny thing?

Remove the plugs and turn it by hand.

if you cant see it with the timing light then the pully might be greasey/dirty. clean it. If not them maybe your gun is not the right set up right. Remember the miats is distributerless

so bumping to 14 degrees doesn't require any step up in fuel? or is 89 recommended?

blech. 94 here at Sunoco stations. 93 is everywhere else. and they pump it for you. :)

It's generally recommended to run premium gas when stepping the timing up that much, especially with the summer temps approaching. I was able to get away with 89 when I ran my 1.6 at 14*, but it really varies from car to car. Some folks have reported knock at 14* with 93. Again, altitude, air temp, and engine variances and condition apply.

thanks miaturbo! dmitrik4 o dont think there will be any trouble with fuel cause in my town there is only 95, 98 and 100 octane fuel :) probably i'll go to 98.

if you're not in the US, the octane rating system is different, and generally results in higher numbers.

that's what i figured, but some posts here made it sounds as if you'd only need premium for 16*+. and for some reason, no one seems to mention it on *name of that big miata board withheld* ;)

Yep, I have to live with the 95+ octane...I may do the RX-7 VAM though...was reading up on it the other day...may help for a boosted app.
