so i have a 03.5 msp and i love it! :) but i my brake came on couple weeks ago and turns on and off whenever it feels like it. when the e-brake is down and i slow down at a stop sign the brakelight turns on, and when i take off sometime it will turn off until i hit the brakes again.

i got a peice of electrical tape covering it but it still bugs be knowing its jacked. is there anyway to fix it by yourself?

thanks

I'd check the contact surface of the ground to your ebrake(or even the wire itself), it might need adjustment or cleaning. Something is causing it to contact with the ground and turning the light on is what I'm thinking. The bad part is neither is easy to do since it involves a center console removal.

well i removed the wire that goes to the brake and i kinda cleaned it and stuff. seemed to work for about 5 min. then it started doing it again...

the only other thing it could be is a failing abs moduel, try hooking it up to a CEL scanner and see if there are any pending codes. I would say check your brake fluid, but I don't believe protege's have a brake fluid level sensor(or if it does and it's full, a faulty connection/sensor could also be the issue).

I have the same situation.
Turns out it was the rear-right wheel spped sensor for the abs system. Somehow it forces it to throw an ABS code, and the parking brake light stays on.

The sensor is only available direct from Mazda, and costs $362 CDN, plus labour.

I've left it alone and no problems, I just double check the pbrake is off before I pull out, and ignore the light.

Mine did the same thing, I noticed if I jammed on the brakes when the car was cold the light would come on, then about 300 feet later go back off.

I got new front pads (mine were barely worn, but I upgraded to EBC Green Stuff), marked the level and checked it again after about 2 weeks (driving for 2 weeks with the light on was nerve racking)... the fluid was at the same level, so I was then comfortable adding to the res... haven't had a brake light (cept for the E brake) since.
