I just changed my oil for the 2nd time now. the first filter installed by mazda in japan I assume was slightly deformed but not to much. I went to my local parts store and opened every filter I could find that fit our cars. I noticed that 2 out of the 15 filters I found had a reinforced plastic tube in the middle. I bought the 1 with the plastic reinforcement and after 5000 miles 0 distortion in the filter.

I have a pic of the filter after 5000 miles if anyone wants to see it just let me know. so find the filters with the plasic inside i guess it takes up the space between the canister and the inside of the filter helping to eliminate any crushing.

I put in 6 quarts the first change only put in 5.5 this time cause it seemed way over the fill line last time but no mechanical problems from it. I always use synthetic mobil 1- 5w30 and go 5k between changes

post pictures please!... i never knew about this... so the filter gets crushed? if there is no plastic inside??

there is a post about this problem a while back I just figured I'd state my observation of what worked in my car not shure if its the plasic or if they changed the dimension of the filter if it was slightly big. here are the pics.

first pic if from this thread also other info on other peoples problems

both are pure 1 filters I assume the only difference is the plastic part they added now

For filter issues. On this NG do a search for " Cartridge Filter Dilemma". Rick CX 7 and I did a fair amount of investigation on filter deformation. To the best of my knowledge now. Purolator with the center support as good; New Mazda (MC made) are good; Wix are good, Napa Gold (Wix) are good. I have no knowledge of any other filters at this time. I have had no problems with the "Old Mazda" (no center tube), New Mazda (MC) and the Wix which is what I am using now. Ed

Great, I installed one of these yesterday with my oil change...is there any issue other than a drop in performance? How long before they twist?

Edit: Nevermind, I'm an idiot who didn't know about this internal filter thing...

There is no "drop in performance" that I am aware of. Purolator stated the distortion is cosmetic only but, some of us wonder about that statement.
